Description
U. K Registered 1980 Volkswagen Golf 1. 5 Diesel historic vehicle,
Rare early survivor, it is MOT exempt and benefits from £0 historic vehicle road tax.
A genuinely rare early Mk1 Gold diesel looking for its next enthusiast owner.
This is a honest, usable 46 year old Golf rather than a restored show car. it has survived remarkably well and has loads of character, but there are some areas that could be improved by somebody who wants to enjoy it while bringing it up to the next level. The car starts, runs and drives and retains the wonderfully simple character that makes these Mk1 Golfs so appealing. It was imported from Ireland and is now UK registered and also has a northern Ireland plate close to its original Irish plate. being a early diesel MK1, it is increasingly unusual car to find, particularly as a complete, useable example rather than a major restoration project.
The body and the interior should be regarded as that of a honest older car. there are age related marks and imperfections and id would rather describe it accurately than pretending it is something it isn't.
This would suit someone who appreciates early Volkswagens and wants a characterful Mk1 they can use, enjoy and improve rathern than a concours car they are frightened to take out.
What makes this Golf special is simply that so few of these early Mk1 diesels have survived. It isn't a restored show car and does not pretend to be one - its a honest old Golf with plenty of character.
I bought it because my parents had one back in the day, same colour Miami Blue and same interior. it feels like a proper early golf and is full of character that made these so popular in the first place. One favourite thing is its honesty. There are thing that the next owner can improve and preserve what is now a very rare early Golf.
I have managed to retain its original brown Irish log book, as part of its history,
it has been re-registered in the UK on an age related "V" registration.
I purchased a Northern Ireland registration to resemble the car original Irish registration, with two letters reversed. That registration is included with the car. So the new owner has a choice as to what they wants to display on her.
Driving her is very much an old - school experience. The early diesel is never going to trouble the land speed record and, like diesels of this era, she can be smoky, particularly when cold or under load. But she gets on with the job and gets you there in her own time.
It isn't a fast car, and that is rather the point. There is something genuinely enjoyable about driving a car from that era when performance wasn't everything. You settle into her pace, enjoy the simplicity and watch the world go by.
she has her quirks, she has character and there is always something that can be improved - but that is part of the reason I've enjoyed owning her.
Land Speed record remains a dream.
Arrival, However has always been achieved unflustered.
