Description
1976 MGB Roadster | 20 Years with Last Owner | Fully Restored | Overdrive |
A lovely example of the classic British MGB Roadster, with an unusually genuine history and a story behind it that will appeal to anyone who appreciates properly cared-for classic cars.
This MGB was purchased in 2006 from its previous owner in Guernsey by its last owner, Mr H. At the time, it was the relatively low mileage and potential of the car that attracted him. Having been a garage proprietor throughout his working life, he was looking for a project to occupy him after retirement and the MGB became that project.
What followed was a total restoration carried out by Mr H himself.
An itemised record of the work undertaken during the restoration is included with the car, along with a small album containing photographs of the MGB taking part in classic car shows and tours after the restoration was completed. The car has also collected medals from its appearances, which are included and can be seen in the photographs.
Once finished, the MGB was used sparingly, mainly for classic MG tours and shows rather than everyday driving.
The reason this much-loved MG has now come to the market is simply its owner’s age. Now 93, he has been unable to comfortably get in and out of the car for several years and, sadly, the MG has not been used for around six years.
Importantly, it has not simply been left forgotten. The car has recently been recommissioned and has had a recent MOT, with all advisories subsequently attended to.
There is an invoice on file for approximately £1, 850 of recommissioning work, including new brake discs, pads and callipers, a new alternator, carburettor adjustment, replacement petrol pipes and various other parts and work.
The car is fitted with the highly desirable manual overdrive gearbox, operating on third and fourth gears. This makes a significant difference to the car on longer journeys and makes the MGB particularly well suited to classic car touring, including European trips.
Overall, the condition is very good. The bodywork is solid, as is the underneath, and the car presents as a very usable and honest classic. The cockpit has retained much of its original character and has stood up very well over the years, with carpets having been replaced previously.
This is not being presented as a concours MGB, nor is it being disguised as something it isn’t. The restoration was carried out some years ago and the car now has the character and patina you would expect from a classic that has been enjoyed rather than simply stored.
What makes this MGB particularly appealing is the combination of its genuine history, relatively low ownership, low mileage, some restoration record and the fact that it has spent the last 20 years in the hands of one enthusiast who restored and maintained it himself.
It is the sort of car that could be taken to local shows and MG events immediately, or enjoyed on the open road with its overdrive making longer journeys far more comfortable.
If you have always fancied owning a proper British sports car, an MGB Roadster remains one of the most enjoyable and accessible classics to own. At £8, 950, this is an unusually interesting example with a lovely history and some supporting documentation.
A brand new soft top hood has been purchased and due to be fitted next week, by a professional trimmer.
A genuine, usable and very presentable MGB Roadster with 20 years of enthusiast ownership and a restoration story to match.
