1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 2 Targa Sport
It is with a heavy heart that I am offering my 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 2 Targa Sport for sale. I have owned this wonderful car for the last four and a half years, and during that time it has been a huge part of my life. I never really intended to sell it — but a house move has forced my hand.
For someone looking for that quintessential 1980s Porsche experience, this is a car that deserves serious consideration.
Finished in the iconic and unmistakably 1980s combination of Guards Red with a black leather interior, it looks every inch the classic 911. The Targa roof gives it that wonderful open-air character, while the 3. 2 Carrera mechanicals provide the combination of performance, reliability and involvement that has made these cars so highly regarded.
The legendary 3. 2 Carrera
Under the rear engine cover is the famous 3. 2-litre air-cooled flat-six. It is a wonderfully characterful engine — strong, responsive and beautifully mechanical in the way only an old air-cooled Porsche can be.
It is coupled to the highly desirable G50 five-speed manual gearbox, which makes this car an absolute joy to drive. The gear change is precise and satisfying, and the whole car feels wonderfully connected to the driver.
This isn’t a car that isolates you from the road. You feel everything.
The steering, throttle response, gearbox and chassis all work together to deliver that classic 911 driving experience. It has excellent handling, strong acceleration and an immediacy that modern cars simply don’t replicate.
This is a beautiful, unrestored example that presents extremely well.
It has been garaged and meticulously serviced throughout its life, with mechanical condition always being a priority. That care is evident when you drive it.
There are no visible signs of rust, and the car has the wonderful appearance of an honest, cherished classic rather than something that has been cosmetically over-restored.
It starts first time, every time and, having owned it for four and a half years, I can honestly say it is an exceptionally dependable classic. It is the sort of Porsche that gives you confidence to point it towards the horizon and go.
The 3. 2 engine has a deserved reputation for robustness and reliability, and this particular car has always felt wonderfully solid and mechanically dependable.
Everything works as it should apart from the clock to tell the time!
There are faster cars., there are newer cars, there are cars with more technology, more power and considerably more refinement.
But there aren’t many cars that give you the same feeling.
The combination of the air-cooled flat-six behind you, the G50 gearbox in your hand, the weight of the steering, the sound of the engine and the view over those unmistakable 911 front wings creates something genuinely special.
This is a car you don’t simply drive, you experience it.
Whether it’s an early Sunday morning blast through the countryside, a long European road trip or simply taking the long way home because you don’t want the journey to end, this Porsche makes even an ordinary drive feel like an occasion.
And that is why selling it is genuinely difficult.
I’ve had this Porsche for four and a half years and have absolutely loved owning it. It has been looked after, enjoyed and appreciated for exactly what it is — a wonderful, honest, usable classic 911.
Unfortunately, a house move means that I have to let it go.
I would love to see it go to someone who understands what makes these cars so special and, ideally, someone who will continue to use and enjoy it rather than simply putting it away.
If you’ve always dreamed of owning an air-cooled 911, this could be the moment to make that dream happen.
Guards Red. Black leather. 3. 2 air-cooled flat-six. G50 five-speed manual. Targa.
It really is a fabulous combination.
The cherished registration shown in the photographs is NOT included in the sale.
The cherished registration will be removed before completion and the car will be returned to its original E-registration number plates.
A genuinely beautiful, highly usable classic Porsche that has been cherished by its current owner and is now looking for its next custodian.
If you’re looking for a 911 that you can actually drive, enjoy and fall in love with, rather than simply admire in a garage, I would encourage you to come and see it.
I suspect the first drive will tell you everything you need to know.
