Description
2001 BMW E38 728i Sport, final facelift model. I bought it in November 2020 and I'm only selling to fund another project. If I had the space and the money for both, it wouldn't be going anywhere.
History
The V5C shows four previous keepers, and I'm the fifth. The car was first registered to BMW Cotswolds, who kept it for four months. It then had two owners between September 2001 and November 2003, and the keeper before me owned it from 2003 until I bought it in 2020.
The car is recorded as Category C from June 2007. When I stripped it for paint and welding, including the subframes and jacking points, I found no signs of structural damage or poor repair. I've done around 9, 000 miles in it, and it's only been used between April and October, so it's been kept off salted winter roads.
It comes with an MOT until 28 September 2027, a big folder of invoices, the original book pack, two main keys, the valet key and the factory telephone, which is still in the centre console box.
Work carried out
I bought it to do a proper overhaul and I've been through nearly every major area. I used genuine or OE parts throughout, right down to the clips and fixings. Anything I took off was refurbished, not just cleaned up.
- Engine: M54 intake manifold upgrade and a fully rebuilt DISA valve.
- Servicing: gearbox service with fresh fluid and a new filter, engine oil service, and all the other fluids replaced.
- Cooling and ancillaries: rebuilt alternator, thermostat, water pump, drive belts, PCV valve, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, MAF sensor and the main engine sensors.
- Subframes and suspension: front and rear subframes removed, sandblasted and powder coated. BC Racing coilovers fitted.
- Underside: sills welded and the underbody sealed.
- Brakes: full overhaul, with the calipers sandblasted and powder coated.
- Fuel tank: removed, sandblasted, powder coated and redone. A well known E38 problem, now sorted.
- Exterior: headlights refreshed with new xenon bulbs, new sunroof seals, partial respray, and new Continental SportContact 6 tyres on the front.
- Air con: fully serviced and blowing cold.
Spares included
I never planned to sell this car, so over the years I collected a lot of parts that are getting hard to find. They all go with it:
- Spare gearbox, driveshafts and rear differential
- Extra set of headlights
- Door seals and door lock mechanisms
- OEM exterior trim clips, bolts and fixings
- Other new, unused parts
Things you should know
There are two small spots of paint starting to bubble. The headlining has started to sag. The windscreen has a small chip, noted as a minor advisory at the last MOT. All of it is minor, but I'd rather you knew before you came to see it.
I'm in no rush. I'd rather wait for the right person who'll appreciate the work that's gone into it than haggle. Viewings are welcome, and I'm happy for a specialist to inspect it before purchase.
It's a proper Sport spec. Shadowline trim, 18" Style 37 M Parallel wheels, and inside you get Contour heated leather seats with memory, the DSP sound system with the digital TV module, the Interior Chrome Line pack, a rear electric sunblind and factory TPMS.
The expensive jobs are already done, so you can drive it, enjoy it and not have to start a project. It's what I'd have wanted to buy myself.
