Big Bumper MK2 16V
Once a common place sight on the roads of Europe and today arguably the most admired and coveted hot hatch of all time. The elusive big bumper final edition remains a car that many aspire to however finding the genuine article that is not spoiled is a difficult task. The sands of time have ensured that literally very few examples remain and of those few even fewer will present correctly.
This low mileage, low owner GTi is of the highest quality and as good as you could ever hope to find. This big bumper car is becoming a rarity now given the short production window it had.
J316 NKM
First registered and pre delivery inspected by VW MCS Medway, Kent on 25th February 1992 and showing 3 previous keepers. It spent almost 25 with the original owner, it was then sold/ registered to Mr Willoughby - the franchise owner of the original supplying VW dealer MCS Medway, Kent. The 3rd keeper purchased some 8 years later, whereafter it was later consigned to Williams Crawford and purchased by our client in 2023.
Factory spec includes power steering, front electric windows manual sunroof and 15" BBS alloy wheels.
Since leaving the factory very little has changed, the addition of rear parking sensors appear to be the only deviation from stock.
This is not some glossy restored car hiding a multitude of sins, it’s an original well preserved survivor that has been stored correctly and lavished with care by each of it's owners. The mileage is 49, 000, the most recent owner purchasing at around 48, 000 and using it as a high days and holidays interest. In this time a considerable amount of attention has been given at the local VW dealer ensuring this 8V model performs as well as it can be, and I have to say its a fantastic drive. A summary of the main areas of spending are set out below. The car is completely HPI clean.
Retaining a high degree of originality, complete with leather owner’s wallet the genuine service booklet and driver’s handbook. The toolkit and spare are complete.
Needless to say this is a car that has been dry stored and used when the weather has allowed, as such its extremely well preserved.
History
Genuine matching numbers car as it left the factory with no colour change or adverse accident damage history in its past. A large file accompanies and a folder of receipts is detailed below in pictures in it's entirety, a clear picture from day one to present day. The most recent yearly services have all been by the main dealer VW St. Andrews, all recorded below in the gallery of images. A complete background and all the provenance to warrant the outstanding condition and low miles.
Condition
The paint is clean and sharp, very impressive with zero fade on any panels, all have a bright red glossy shine free from any minor imperfections, it's like a coat of enamel and aside the front bumper (too perfect chip free for 49k) it appears to be all factory finish. The seats barely show signs of wear, it's in lovely unspoiled condition, the headlining is A1 perfect, equally, all the plastic trim is in first class shape with a deep lustre, sitting flush to the body with factory fit. All paint glass and rubbers are spot on, the engine bay & boot exude low mileage youth. There is almost nothing to point out. The factory red finish is clear as day under the wheels arches and the floor pan on the underside.
The BBS rims are in outstanding condition shod with matching Goodyear tyres.
I cannot recall seeing a MK2 with such a preserved interior, dash, engine and boot, the many images and video will hopefully illustrate this.
On The Road
The car drives as well as it looks with a light clutch, positive smooth gear change and beautifully balanced steering. The engine revs freely and pulls well in each gear reminding you just how much fun can be had with cars from this era that beg to be driven and don’t have huge bhp.
It sits perfectly and rides with a solid firm and well absorbed drive. This is an all systems go car ready to be enjoyed when the mood and the weather allows. She moves as one whole piece, perhaps even better than I remember reaffirming that subsequent generations have robbed the dynamic feel and driver enjoyment. If you want practicality, performance and strength in one affordable package, few things will deliver like the Mk2 GTI and is easily the most practical and sensible everyday modern classic in its price range.
Summary
Be assured this is a bona fide classic investment quality VW. It's sure to be a continually appreciating asset each year as these models in clean honest condition become more and more scarce. Prices are already shifting for tired cars but there is nothing comparable to this in the market place at present in this price range, and no substitute for originality and proper care. Restored cars are appearing on the scene, some nut & bolt examples are into £50k territory, purely because they had to spend so much to restore them - however, that's not a match for an original unrestored car in the same condition built in the factory.
Anyone serious must view the many detailed images in the gallery to observe the preserved state of the vehicle as a whole.
