Model history:
The Ferrari BB 512i (Berlinetta Boxer 512 Injection) marks a milestone in Ferrari’s history. Introduced in 1981, it represents the ultimate evolution of the BB range, launched in 1973 with the 365 GT4 BB. This revolutionary model embodies Ferrari’s shift to a mid-rear engine architecture for its GTs, inspired by the brand’s racing successes.
As with its predecessors, the BB 512i sports a sculpted design by Pininfarina. The lowlines, retractable headlights and the wide side air intake showcase its resolutely sporting character. The aggressive yet elegant proportions help make the BB a true style icon of the 1970s and 1980s.
The main innovation of the BB 512i lies in the introduction of Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, replacing the carburettors of earlier models. This 5-litre flat-12 engine develops 340 horsepower, delivering remarkable performance with a top speed approaching 280 km/ h. The injection also improves reliability and reduces emissions, meeting the standards of the era.
The BB 512i marks the end of the Berlinetta Boxer series. Ferrari produced around 1, 007 units between 1981 and 1984. It was replaced by the Ferrari Testarossa, but remains in memory as one of the purest and most iconic GTs of its time.
Today, the BB 512i is a coveted piece among collectors, prized for its rarity, timeless design and its role in the evolution of mid-engine Ferraris.
History of this Ferrari BB512i:
Delivered new in Monaco by Monaco Motors in May 1984, then shipped to Mr. Paul Novelly (Apex Oil company) in Missouri; we have all the import documents from 1984!
In 2006, on changing hands, its odometer showed 10, 952 km, and since then we have a full service history with multiple maintenance invoices. In October 2017 we also have a Ferrari New York Technical Inspection indicating 12, 606 km before acquisition by its last owner. This owner imported it to France during a move.
In 2023 the major service was carried out, including belts, clutch and various peripheral components. It then had 14, 352 km.
Bodywork:
Magnificent deep black coachwork with excellent door and bonnet alignment. The Nero finish remains rare compared with more common shades like Rosso Corsa.
Interior:
The white leather upholstery is in excellent condition, with a superb patina. The carpets and door panels are clean. As are the dashboard and headlining.
Mechanical:
The Ferrari BB512i houses a 4, 943 cm³ (5-litre) Flat-12 engine. Electronic Bosch K-Jetronic injection distinguishes it from earlier carburetted versions. This engine develops around 340 horsepower. Previous owners have kept up maintenance regularly, and the major service was performed in 2023, including replacement of belts, the clutch and various peripheral components. On that occasion it showed 14, 352 km on the odometer.
Gearbox:
Operation is smooth; gear changes are excellent and as they should be.
Running gear:
The front suspension is stable, with very good handling. The chassis behaviour is perfect. There is no play or noise detected. The suspension is flawless and the road-holding excellent.
Braking performance:
Braking is perfect and straight-line, with the brakes recently overhauled.
