Description

MGB GT V8, year 1971.
Chassis number GHD5 2462796. Exterior colour red paired with a black vinyl interior and black carpet.
This magnificent MGB GT was built as a standard four‑cylinder MGB GT in June 1971. The car was first registered in the Netherlands in May 1975. It was already equipped with a high‑compression Rover P5/ P6 3500 V8 (10. 5:1). The original 1975 paper registration form is still present, proving the V8 was already installed.
Since its origin, the car has covered only 91, 630 miles (about 147, 000 kilometres), which is correct as the odometer reading is consistent and verified according to the Dutch Vehicle Authority.
Unfortunately, the location of the initial V8 conversion is unknown.
It is said to be a Costello V8 conversion, but we have no proof.
Not documented and not supported by available mechanical/ exterior details online.
Only the presence of the V8 engine and a 'Costello' badge on the grille support this hypothesis.
Since 1975, the car has been cherished by only three owners, two brothers having successive ownership since 1983.
The car is being sold without a documented history, but we know it as well as its last owner has held it for over 20 years. It is in very good condition and has been well maintained over the years.
The bodywork has recently been repainted in its original colour.
The first four years of this MG MGB GT V8 remain a mystery, but since its first registration in May 1975, its history has been rock‑solid.
In fact, this MGB GT is an excellent left‑hand‑drive V8 conversion, fitted with a genuine Rover 3500 high‑compression V8 of 180 bhp SAE (161 bhp DIN) powered by a four‑barrel Edelbrock carburettor, delivering even more performance!
The bonnet, sporting a few dings, comes from a six‑cylinder MGC, and the Revolution wheels are vintage original spec wearing Dunlop 185/ 70 R14 tyres.
Additionally, the car is fitted with a four‑speed gearbox with overdrive.
MG drew on the 'Costello' MGB V8 and launched their own version in April 1975. Factory cars were all built with right‑hand drive and a de‑tuned (143 bhp SAE) Rover 3500 V8.
The showcased MGB GT, with its early V8 conversion, proved to be a very well‑engineered car and a reliable tourer!
This MGB GT V8 will be a superb find for the MG enthusiast/ historian looking to explore the early days of the car while fully enjoying this magnificent and impressive beast!
