Description
Mythical Ducati 900 SS, 1980, second-series in JPS colours, fully restored. Signature of Rino Caracchi on the fairing.
The 900 SS for SuperSport is an iconic model of the marque that was assembled entirely by hand at the time in Borgo Panigale. It was born in 1975 to support the 750 SS in Ducati's sports range and remained in the catalogue until the end of 1981. Its 90° V-twin four-stroke engine with square cases is derived from the 860 GT and develops 72 horsepower at 7, 500 rpm. The great technical originality of this SS is its desmo‑dromic distribution with electronic ignition, equipped with a 5‑speed gearbox, for a dry weight of 188 kg the Belle pushes to 225 km/ h, with braking provided by Brembo with perforated discs of 280 mm at the front and 229 mm at the rear. The fork and rear shock are supplied by the famous Marzocchi components. On our model, 40 mm Dell’Orto carburetors are fitted as an option, as well as magnificent and magical Conti silencers. The meagre production of the 900 SS ends at the end of 1981. Its replacement would not appear until 1989. Our bike 089702 ' DM860SS ' is a 900 SS second-series from 1980, black and gold in the John Player Special colours. This motorcycle has undergone a total restoration by a Bologna brand enthusiast, on almost permanent display next to other Ducatis; it has covered very few miles since restoration, during a meeting the great Rino Carrachi of NCR, now deceased, signed this bike on its fairing. Only 2, 684 units of this series were manufactured. It’s a rolling icon with a magical and unforgettable sound.
