History of the Mercedes 280 SL Pagode
A legend of a car born from Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship
The history of the Mercedes 280 SL Pagode is that of a car born from passion and refinement. A true icon of German design, it embodies the perfect balance between sportiness and comfort. Succeeding the early generations of the SL range, this version marked a turning point for Mercedes-Benz, which aimed to create a car capable of uniting performance and elegance. Its flowing line, signed Paul Bracq, still seduces today with its simplicity and purity. The famous concave roof, inspired by Asian pagodas, has even earned it its now mythical nickname.
Elegance, power and reliability
Under the bonnet, the Mercedes 280 SL Pagode houses an inline six-cylinder engine renowned for its flexibility and reliability. This powerful yet refined unit offers driving pleasure that is both enjoyable and dynamic, faithful to the star emblem’s reputation. Moreover, its rigid chassis and precise steering ensure exemplary on-road handling. Its suspension comfort makes it a true grand tourer coupé-convertible. Thus, every drive at the wheel becomes an experience blending serenity and sensation.

Inside, the Mercedes 280 SL Pagode reflects all the luxury and artisanal know-how of Mercedes-Benz. Precious woods, soft leather and clear instrumentation compose an interior of rare refinement. The car we present to you
An imported Pagode, restored and carefully maintained
The Mercedes 280 SL Pagode we present is a superb example imported from California in 2010. Preserved in remarkable condition, it has belonged to the same owner since 2013. He undertook a complete mechanical restoration, scrupulously respecting the original specifications. In 2018, the engine was rebuilt to factory standards, the gearbox refreshed, and the engine bay completely restored for more than €57, 000 at the Bracq Heritage Workshops, near Bordeaux, renowned for their expertise on classic Mercedes-Benz models. Since then, the car has covered only 3, 000 kilometres.
However, it also bears testament to a fine restoration completed in the United States, with a non-original colour featuring a few minor aesthetic faults.
This Pagode benefits from a factory set of options confirmed by the chassis plate:
Code 426: 4-speed automatic transmission, a pledge of comfort and steering ease, with original power steering.
Code 491: US version.
Code 513: Exterior mirror on the passenger side, rare on vintage models.
Code 515: Becker Europe radio installed at factory, a symbol of refinement.
Code 670 H: Exterior paint Light Ivory, elegant and typical of classic Mercedes.
Code 423 H: Hardtop colour code and Tobacco Brown hubcaps, a harmonious original combination.
Code 6: Hard-top mounted on the vehicle, soft top folded.
Technical inspection is up to date and shows no faults, confirming the perfect working condition of this car. In addition, its exemplary road behaviour and meticulous aesthetics testify to the care taken in its preservation. With its timeless elegance, its original mechanics and its transparent history, this Mercedes 280 SL Pagode wonderfully illustrates the art of German grand touring and the prestige of Mercedes-Benz roadsters.
