History
The car that proudly stood at the pinnacle of high-performance in 1965 was none other than the Shelby Cobra 427, a slender English roadster from the 1950s, equipped with Ford’s biggest V8. In the test of the Cobra 427 published in the November 1965 issue of C/ D, Brock Yates wrote that the Cobra’s performance “could well set a record among performance cars readily available to the public” and that “we think the Cobra 427 may be the most rugged car on the market.”
Now, thanks to the magic of replication, you too can travel back to the Golden Age of horsepower behind the wheel of an ERA 427SC from Era Replica Automobiles (608-612 East Main Street, New Britain, Connecticut 06051).
Replicas – in kits or turnkey – are of course nothing new. Unfortunately, most are the fruit of opportunistic builders, bolder than tasteful, that flatter the nostalgic inclinations of amateur tinkers or car enthusiasts with a taste for cars a little off-kilter. The list of replicas is very long, with garish and expensive bespoke creations, such as 1930s Mercedes lookalikes on one end, and MG TC imitations on a Beetle chassis on the other. Most are little more than models that please the public.
The ERA 427SC, however, is not at all a replica. Given the Cobra’s legendary status, it’s not surprising that it is among the rare Cobra kits currently available – and perhaps the best. ERA does not merely evoke the past; it is a sincere attempt at faithful reproduction. The SC is to Shelby’s original what a modern Chippendale cabinet is to the original: even an expert cannot tell the difference without close inspection. From the voluptuous curves of the bodywork to details as precise as the instrument cluster graphics, the ERA 427 is of impeccable accuracy.
Description
We offer for sale this magnificent ERA replica of the AC Cobra 427 SC, produced in the early 1980s by the American company ERA.
The vehicle is in excellent condition, left-hand drive. Acquired in 2025 by its current owner in street version; it has been registered on French collection registration papers.
From a private American collection, this car has very little mileage and has charmed its owner for leisurely drives and road trips under the American sun.
At the heart of this roadster lies the Ford 427 cubic inch (7 litre) V8, a engine born from the rivalry between Ford and Chrysler Hemi in the 1960s. Developing phenomenal power, the 427 is paired with a four-speed Ford Toploader manual gearbox and an independent rear axle from Jaguar/ Salisbury with a limited-slip differential and a final drive of 3. 54:1. The car delivers blistering acceleration and a driving experience that recalls the raw performance of the original Cobras.
The cockpit blends vintage aesthetics with modern equipment. Black leather racing seats, Crow multi-point harnesses and a wood-rimmed steering wheel give it classic charm.
With only 5, 000 miles on the odometer, this roadster has been cherished and meticulously maintained.
Our verdict
One of the finest COBRA replicas available for sale today. A well-built machine with rigorous, high-quality equipment. A car for enthusiasts; the future owner should expect a broad grin when elbows-deep in the driving experience, at least when behind the wheel…
