1968 Porsche 911 Custom – Classified of the Week

There are some classics that lend themselves to the notion of being built into something custom more than others. The Land Rovers, the Jaguars, the Aston Martins and of course, the Porsches. In fact, we’d go so far as to say the Porsche 911 is one of the most widely modified classics out there. And why not? It has been around since the dawn of time, and as such now celebrates a huge aftermarket brimming with parts and equipment to transform any 911 into something truly custom. Then there are the companies that go out of their way to dance to their own tune. Singer, for example, has a name for itself by customising 911s. But Singers carry an often eye-watering price tag. What if you don’t want to sell off a kidney in order to facilitate your air-cooled dream? Well, you could buy this 1968 Porsche 911 by famed specialists, Zuffenhaus.
This custom 911 has been built up around a 1968 right hand-drive shell, which was first fully restored with new panels and metal where required. Including a full floorpan from Porsche. The whole thing was then undersealed to protect it for years to come. The body wears a fibreglass S style front bumper, RS style rear bumper and RS front wings. The doors are fibreglass with Kevlar inners, as is the bonnet and deck lid. The whole thing was painted gloss white, and then filled with custom low-back Recaro seats, MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, bespoke black perforated headlining, roll cage, custom door pulls, Onassis Porsche harnesses, rear seat pads and lightweight carpets.
As for the mechanical stuff, you’ve got a 1974 2.7S factory high compression engine. It was rebuilt 6,000 miles ago by Zuffenhaus, and now has a new clutch and ignition system along with rebuilt carbs. There’s a sporty cam, upgraded pistons, new manifolds, a snorty straight-through exhaust and a racy dogleg manual transmission. It has Carrera 3.2 brakes, and each corner plays host to a three-piece Compomotive Fuchs style wheel. Staggered, naturally. It is, as you can see form the pictures, stunning. The lowered stance, the big meats out back with skinny rubber up front. The simple but purposeful aesthetic. It’s a glorious thing. And it could be yours for a most un-Singer-like £78,995.
This is the kind of custom classic that will forever put a smile on your face. It’s a beauty to behold, make no mistake. But it’s also going to be something of a beast to drive. Light, agile, poised and balanced, this is the kind of car that will make you fall in love with driving again. It will also turn heads, none more so than your own. You will never, ever be able to park this custom Porsche and walk away without looking back. Imagine that feeling, looking back at this, your custom Porsche 911. A 911 like no other.
