1969 Citroën ID Break Familiale – Project Profile

The Citroën DS. It’s one of those cars that we have all either lusted after at some point in the past, or still lust after today. It’s beautiful, it’s quirky, it’s exciting, it handles like a magic carpet… but for all that goodness, there is no escaping the fact it’s also fiercely complicated when it comes to the mechanical side of things. Arguably more complicated than any home mechanic can realistically think about maintaining themselves. That’s why this 1969 Citroën DS Break Familiale is worth your attention. It needs a bit of aesthetic love, but over the years the past owners have spared no expense at all on the all important mechanical stuff. Add in the fact that this is the super rare semi-automatic model, and you’re left presented with a very special opportunity indeed. Dust off your passport, we’re going to the Netherlands…

What is it?

It is, as we just mentioned, a 1969 Citroën DS Break Familiale, which means it’s the estate version. This car, which is currently in the Netherlands (think of the magical ‘getting to you know you’ drive home), is finished in silver with ’60s-tastic orange cloth interior, it’s running, it’s driving and thanks to years of an open wallet, is in outstanding mechanical condition. It’s powered by a 2,175cc inline-four engine, it has a four-speed semi-automatic transmission, that all important hydraulic suspension and much, much more. Mechanically, it’s had a stainless exhaust, brakes, tyres, regular servicing and advisory-free MOTs, the suspension and bushes have been renewed, the ignition system, the electrics, the list goes on. It’s fighting fit and ready to go. It just needs a visual tickle.

Why is it a project?

Honestly, you could drive it as it. However, given the special nature of the car, its rich and detailed history and the fact you’re (probably) going to be introducing it to the UK climate, we would advise getting some work done. There is corrosion on the front wings, the pillars are starting to show age and rust in places, various bits of paintwork need attention, there are scratches and imperfections, the rubbers are failing around some windows. It’s all visual. And it’s all forgivable, this car had been used and enjoyed, so now it’s maybe time to relax a bit and let it have a more gentle life. And that means a full visual restoration will be worthwhile and long lasting. There are myriad companies here in the UK that can supply parts and do the work, there are specialists and clubs that help you with advice along the way. And because this Familiale is running strong, you can get it there no problem!

What should you do with it?

As we suggested, if it were our money, we would get it fully, visually restored and call it done. This car deserves it. It’s been a trusty companion for decades, and it has never failed its owners. Now though, it’s time for a more relaxed life. One in which it can be admired and fawned over, and one in which it looks its absolute best. Plus, given the unending popularity of the DS, the money will never be wasted, especially not with a model as rare as this.
