There a lot of cars for sale on Car & Classic. Tens of thousands in fact, spanning all eras and all makes, no matter how obscure they may be. It doesn’t matter what your automotive desire is, there will be something to scratch the itch within these digital pages. But what car scratches the most itches, so to speak? Of all the glorious makes and models, which is the one that sends our search function into a frenzy on a near daily basis? The Porsche 911, that’s what. And when looking through the classified for a car to talk about this week, we stumbled upon what has to be one of the best 911s out there, namely a magnificent Moss Green 911 Turbo. A 930 Turbo, no less.

The 930 was the first incarnation of the 911 Turbo, and was never really built to be a showroom success. Instead, it was a means to an end for Porsche, as it needed to build something for homologation purposes. However, when the production version of the 911 Turbo landed, it was a hit, with buyers and to motoring press keen to sing the virtues of this visceral, fast and undeniably wild machine. With a turbocharged flat-six hanging out of the back, with north of 230bhp, it was a car that never failed to provide an adrenaline-fuelled ride. Porsche could have built a few hundred and called it a day, but instead it ended up building nearly 19,000 of them to satiate a global appetite.

Launched in the 1970s, it would be the 1980s when the 911 Turbo came into full stride. Its flared arches, massive rear wing and increased power of over 320bhp made for an intoxicating mix in the ‘more is more’ period. But it wasn’t just a symbol of wealth and excess, it was also a true performer. Not only that, it was the 911 that saved the 911. At the time, Porsche was considering killing the 911 off in favour of the 928, and did indeed halt sales of the 930 in the US and Japan. However, a change of management saw the 930 return in those markets. In turn, it cemented the 911’s ‘forever’ place within the Porsche line-up.

And when, then, of the car we have selected here? A stunning Moss Green Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo. Well, just look at it. It’s a break from the usual whites, reds, blacks and blues you might associate this car with. The colour is, we won’t lie, what turned our head here. It’s bold, bright and different, which is difficult to find in the perpetually popular Porsche world. Take this to a show, and there won’t be another one like it. It’s been restored according to the vendor, including a full respray, it’s covered a mere 121k, the wheels have been refurbished, it has new tyres and it is of course in rude mechanical health. We’ve had a look through the car’s MOT history, and other than some tyres and bulbs, there is nothing of concern. It’s been looked after.

If you want a proper automotive icon, a poster child for power and speed and excess, this is it. It strikes us as being a very nice example indeed, and the aforementioned exclusivity that comes care of the unusual paint (and did we mention the green leather interior, too?) adds up to make this a 911 Turbo you don’t want to miss out on. Get it bought, get the techno turned up to eleven, and make sure the car phone is charged.

If you do miss out on this one, but are searching for your very own magnificent automotive icon, here’s where you can find a Porsche 911 for sale.
