Classic Volkswagens always have and always will be incredibly popular, which is no bad thing. This popularity means that owning and maintaining one is a breeze. The only downside of that popularity, however, is that it can be hard to find something that truly stands out. Worry not though, as this week’s classified of choice – a 1992 Volkswagen Scirocco GT – does just that. It’s one of the last of this generation to be built, it’s in incredible, original condition and at a hair under five grand, it’s a bargain, too. If you want a classic VW, this is it.

Mechanically, the Scirocco was a very clever bit of design for Volkswagen, as it was nothing more than a Mk1 Golf underneath. This meant it was easy to build. However, while it was Golf beneath, it was a sleek, sexy three-door on top. This Scirocco GT is a Type 2 version, or Typ 53B if you want to get really nerdy, and as a 1992 build, is one of the last classic Sciroccos ever made. Powered by the 1.8 four-cylinder petrol engine seen in other VWs, mated up to a five-speed manual transmission powering the front wheels, it’s a hoot to drive.

Of course, the issues with any old Volkswagen can be many. Happily though, this Scirocco GT hasn’t fallen victim to any. It’s why we’ve chosen it this week. First of all, it’s never been modified. Instead, it stands in original condition with the only notable changes being a more modern stereo head unit and some aftermarket (but wonderfully period) Hella driving lights. It’s never been restored, because it has never needed it. The paint is original, it’s never been welded and while it does have some signs of life here and there, it’s still a show-ready car. Originality turns heads in the VW world.

It’s done 163,000 miles over the course of its 31 years, but twelve of those years were with the current owner who has clearly doted on this Scirocco GT during his tenure. In fact, the only reason the car is being sold is because of the arrival of a Corrado VR6. Understandable. And while that’s no doubt sad for them, it presents as a great opportunity for you.

Classic Volkswagens will always have a strong following, and this Scirocco GT is a glowing example of why. It’s a cool, usable, handsome classic that is easy to maintain and will be a constant source of joy to own. Its originality makes it special, too. It’s rare to find one like this. Add in the fact that this is one of the last of its kind to be built, and you really do have something very special indeed. And it’s a bargain at £4,750. Buy it, pamper it, enjoy it, you’ll never lose a penny. Not that money will matter, of course, because this is a car you’re not going to want to part with.
