2000 Nissan 200SX – Auction Car of the Week

Following on from last week’s Nissan Skyline lust, we have another stunning motor from the land of the rising sun. Again, it’s a Nissan and again, it’s very exciting. No offence to Dale, but it might be even more exciting than the Skyline he chose to write about. You see, what we have here is a 2000 Nissan 200SX. But this one has never seen the inside of Driftworks, it’s never had a hydro handbrake fitted, the differential hasn’t be welded up on someone’s driveway and it has never once been sticker-bombed, whatever that is? This one is mint, it is utterly original and it has covered a mere 28,000 miles. And if you know these cars, you’re reading this and thinking ‘yeah, but I bet it’s an automatic‘. Well, no, it’s a manual. So ner.

The 200SX is part of a long lineage of sporty Nissan Silvia coupes. It never had the all-wheel-drive, fire-spitting image of the Skylines, but it didn’t need to. The SX was a GT car, something for getting from point A to point B with huge swathes of speed, righteous reliability and enviable enjoyment. The manual version, however, made it that little bit more of a driver’s car. That bit more alert and engaging. You could cruise with ease, sure, but you could also win it up through the gears, feed that turbo power in and let the SR20DET engine sing.

This car, finished in glorious gloss red, as been with the current owner for around eleven years, and has been used sparingly. Prior to this, early owners were clearly of the same mindset. There is a full folder of documentation supporting the mileage. It looks as though it’s never seen a salted road, or even bad weather in general. It has been kept garaged for the last decades at least, probably longer going off the excellent condition. Both keys are present, as is the alarm fob, and there is MOT present until July 2023.

Inside, the cabin is every bit the environment the brochure promised. There is some ever so slight wear to the seats, but nothing worrying. 25,000 miles is still 25,000 mile, and that means bums in seats! The plastics are all excellent, the dash is mint, the original steering wheel and shift knob are present, as the carpets are great and there is a delightfully period Sony stereo head unit fitted. That’s about the only modification you’ll find, though should you want to revert back, OE stereos are out there. The boot is clean and tidy, and ready for your luggage for that spirited weekend getaway.

Externally, well, just look at it. That angry, ‘eyebrows down’ facelift front. If you see this in your rear view mirror, you move out of the way. The lights are all bright and clear with no UV damage or hazing, all the factory badging is present and correct, and the car sits on a set of factory alloy wheels which are all in lovely condition bar one mark on offside front. By and large, this 200SX wouldn’t look out of place in a turn of the century Nissan dealership. It has some signs of life, naturally, like a small mark by the offside fog light, but it’s nothing to express any real concern over. The only thing we’d change is the tyres, as they are getting on. However, due to being stored inside, there is no cracking or damage to be seen.

Like all Japanese performance cars, the 200SX has come out of the depreciation curve. Now, good cars are genuine investment pieces, but ones you can drive and enjoy without any real concerns. To find one today, that is both turbocharged and manual is rare. To find one that hasn’t been modified is practically unheard of. This is a serious ‘once in a lifetime’ proposition, and whoever secures the winning bid is going to be nothing but delighted. If you want a modern classic that will be reliable, fun, captivating and always in demand, this is it, make no mistake. Miss it, and you truly will be missing out.
