Halfords Garage Matting- Product Review

Car & Classic

Having a garage in which you can work on your car is great, the same can be said for a driveway. What’s not great, however, is the fact the floor is always cold. Or, in the summer, so hot you could cook a fried breakfast on it. There are myriad solutions out there, of course. Mats, coverings, even clothing to make the interaction with the ground a bit more pleasant. However, that first option – a simple mat – seems to be the best. And in the case of this interlocking set from Halfords, we’re not sure there is better solution.

The Product

In each pack, you get six interlocking black foam mats. One pack can be ‘assembled’ to cover an area of 120x180cm, which is a lot. The interlocking ‘teeth’ are angled, so they won’t slip apart, and while every mat is the same and ‘toothed’ on all four sides, the pack comes with straight finishing strips to give them a cleaner look. It also makes fitting them next to walls or furniture much easier. Made from a durable foam, there is a ‘chequer plate’ design, and each mat is just under a centimetre  thick. They’re good, basically. And they cover a lot of literal ground, especially if like me, you buy two packs. At £25 delivered, it seemed rude not to.

The Test

I mean, other than connect them all together, there’s not a lot of testing I can do. What I can tell you is that it took about ten minutes to lay them out, and they transform the garage. I can also tell you that the shiny new ones aren’t the only ones I have. I have some I bought years ago, and they have been used inside, outside, they have had jacks on them, they have been left outside in all weathers, they have been covered in all manner of mechanical moisture and they’re still perfectly usable. These things are, make no mistake, incredibly durable.

The Result

£25 for all that square footage, they are tough as old boots, they stop the cold concrete from sucking all the heat out of you, they’re comfortable to sit/lie/lean on, they don’t break down if you spill chemicals on them, and if you don’t need to use them, they stack up neatly. If you don’t have a set, you’re missing out. Truly. Get them in your garage, in your shed, have them to hand should you need to roll about on the driveway while working on your vehicle. You will not regret it.

The Verdict –  5 out of 5

One of the best things I have bought for my garage, and I have a lot of cool things in there! For the comfort, the added insulation, ease of use and the simple but brilliant design, these mats are a no brainer.
