Kirkland Microfibre Cloths – Product Review

To own a classic car is to spend many a happy hour in the sun, cleaning every little corner and curve of it. For us, there is nothing finer than knocking the dirt off and making our beloved motors shine again. It’s satisfying, it’s relaxing and as you do it, you get to know your car that little bit more. In our case, that means finding more things we need to fix, but that’s what we get for buying a Rover. On the whole though, cleaning it is always a joy. Especially as we like to make sure we have the right kit in stock to do so. Kit like these brilliant microfibre cloths from Kirkland.

Now, you might think we’re doing some barrel scraping here, reviewing cloths. We’re not though. The problem with microfibre cloths is the fact that they are everywhere, and there are a lot of very cheap and as such, rubbish options out there. As with everything else we review, we have tested these cloths properly. In fact, we have done more than that. We’ve been using these Kirkland cloths for years and years. They are our go to, and they should be yours, too.

The Product

Kirkland, if you’re not familiar, is the in-house brand of Costco, the massive bulk-buying warehouse you have probably seen. However, unlike other in-house brands, Kirkland stuff is actually brilliant. From food, to drinks, to clothes to home furnishings, Kirkland covers it all. And that includes car care products. These microfibre cloths have been a Kirkland mainstay for years, largely because they’re so damn good. 40.6cm by 40.6cm, they’re big, they’re invitingly soft, they’re absorbent and they will never harm the paint on your car, or scuff up your interior plastics. You can use them for all manner of things, even dusting in the house if you so choose. You could stitch a load together and make a yellow suit, whatever you like, really. And unlike all the cheap rubbish online, you can throw these in the washer and use them again. And again. And again.

The Test

As with other things we have reviewed, these Kirkland microfibre cloths are not the result of one test. Instead, we have been using them for years. We buy a pack of 36 direct from Costco as and when we need to, though you can buy them online, so don’t think you need a Costco membership. Fresh out of the pack, we used them for applying polish, or glass cleaner and so on. Or for buffing off wax and the like. The soft weave makes all these tasks a joy. The only thing to remember is to rip off the label – easy, as it’s designed to come off. Once used for the clean stuff, they go in the washer and then can be used again, or they’re soiled heavily, they get used for more grubby tasks like door jambs, engine bay and wheels.

The Result

These cloths are simply excellent. They buff and polish without leaving a trace, and they glide over paint and metal without fear of scuffing. They’re plenty big enough, so with a bit of quarters folding, one towel goes a long way. They wash well, too. Really well. Wash and dry them and they’re as good as new, meaning you get loads of use out of them. The ack of 36 goes a long, long way, make no mistake. And at £24, it works out to 66p a cloth, which is astonishing given the quality. We know of professional detailer that swear by these cloths, so you’ll be in good company. They are exemplary.

The Verdict – 5 out of 5

The best on the market, as far as we’re concerned. A bargain price, incredible versatility and unrivalled ‘wash and use again’ longevity. You might think £24 is a lot to spend on a pack of cloths, but in the case of these Kirkland ones, you’ll be glad you did. Especially given how long they last. Go on, buy some, your classic deserves them.
