The Appeal
Come for the masterwork of Massimo Tamburini, stay for the craftsmanship of Born To Be Wild’s John Tooze. If your memory stretches that far, you may already know this bike because, once the remarkable artwork was completed, it became a mainstay of many early Noughties shows, including Beaulieu, Goodwood, and Munich. It also featured in various magazines.
The photos show why. Tooze spent 450 hours perfecting the design and paint finish you see in the photos, including applying 36 coats of lacquer. This F4 is as much a work of art as a serious superbike. The work includes a bespoke saddle and other detailing like the gold rims. The history file tells us that the bike has been signed by Valentino Rosso and Giacomo Agostini and there is also a signed photo by the ‘Prince of Speed’ Phil Read riding this very bike.
A handy multipage article provided with the bike adds useful detail to its early history. In those days it was used rather than merely displayed. The vendor acquired it in 2009, and we can thank him that it is so well preserved. He has largely displayed it in a heated room, which has ensured it looks much as it did when Tooze completed it. We are told that it has been serviced regularly and runs and drives without issue. That means the buyer could exploit what is undoubtedly one of the greatest superbikes of its era, a design masterpiece that kickstarted Agusta’s rejuvenation, or instead do what the current one has and simply admire a visual treat. If the buyer does plan to ride it, it will need a fresh MOT before hitting the road.
