The Appeal
The brilliance and beauty of Jaguar’s Mk2 meant it continued in production, even after the all-new XJ6 arrived. By that point it had lost the Mk2 badge in favour of 340 and 240, with these cars easily identified by their slimmer bumpers.
This 1968 car is one of only 2,265 RHD factory 340s, built in 1968 towards the end of production. It retains its desirable ‘manual overdrive’ MOD gearbox, but it is now mated to a larger 3.8L XK mill. The ‘red on red’ colour scheme was applied as part of a late 80s restoration and it now fitted with slim Coombs rear arches.
The vendor acquired the car in 2017 and shortly after commissioned a full engine rebuild costing close to £9,000. The car was then put into storage for several years and has covered less than 2,000 miles since. Although there are a few points to note regarding the paintwork and bodywork, the car carries a useful voluntary MOT with no advisories, which confirms the structure’s condition.
The Mk2 is a great touring car and with its bigger engine, fully synchromesh gearbox, gorgeous interior and vast Webasto roof, this one looks tailor-made for driving.
