The 300 SEL 6. 3 originated from a private experiment by Mercedes engineer Erich Waxenberger, when in 1966 he transplanted an M100 engine and automatic transmission from the 600 series into the 300 SEL.
Its performance was legendary, surpassing that of most sports cars of the era. A Porsche 911 S at that time took approximately 9. 5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/ h. The Mercedes 6. 3 managed it in 6. 5 seconds!
Despite the high price, which was roughly double that of a 280 SEL, the 300 SEL 6. 3 was a great success.
Only later did Mercedes also offer smaller eight-cylinder engines (3. 5 and 4. 5) in its S-Class.
Our car was built in May 1972, 4 months before the end of production.
The last vehicles built already had some design elements of the successor, such as the "piano key" steering wheel and the modern gearshift.
On May 29, 1972, our 6. 3 was registered to its first owner, a tool manufacturer from Gütersloh in Germany.
As optional extras, he chose, among other things, the Behr air conditioning, 4 headrests, the headlight wiper system, the electric sunroof, and the tinted glass including heated rear window.
The factory director mainly used the car for long-distance travel to his second factory in Switzerland.
The original service booklet is available and documents an exemplary maintenance history from day one until today.
In 1992, the car, with approximately 100, 000 km on the odometer, was sold to the second owner, who was to maintain the fantastic original condition of the 6. 3 and continue its care with at least the same level of diligence.
Correspondence between the two owners, the old advertisement and many other historical documents were preserved and are part of the extensive vehicle file.
After 35 years in its second owner's possession, this unique 300 SEL 6. 3 is now being handed over to a good home due to the owner's age.
In 40 years of dealing in classic cars, we have never seen a better example.
