An original LHD car, this Vantage ‘Flip Tail’, the 3rd of the 19 built, before the adoption of the Oscar India body styling in 1978 and delivered new into the USA. Owned for some 20 years by one enthusiast owner and author of Aston Martin journals and books, before being acquired and re-imported some 6 years ago by a European collector.
The result of wind tunnel development and fine tuning the 1977 V8 Vantage, was immediately hailed as Britain’s first supercar. Performance in raw statistics was exceptional, with power unquoted but known to be circa 400 bhp, a 0-60 mph time of 5. 2 seconds and a top speed of 170 mph. Combined with the additional stability afforded by the wind tunnel developed aerodynamic aids as applied, the Vantage set new standards of performance, whilst attracting attention from the world’s motoring press and a new breed of supercar buyer alike.
Accompanied with a comprehensive history file, charting the cars early life in the USA and in Europe, with invoices and statements confirming the current engine specification to the last stage of tune, the renowned ‘X’ Pack specifications. Delivering some 430 BHP, assistance was given by Aston Martin’s director of engine development Arthur Wilson in the supply of components and engine expertise for the re-build. Fitted with large bore exhaust and induction systems, lightweight Cosworth Pistons and semi competition camshafts, the originally numbered engine has covered some 3, 500 miles since the rebuild and the car a recorded 52, 000 miles, in total.
Chassis and body restored this rare and exceptionally well-maintained car, finished in period Aston Martin colour Tudor Green, retains its original Burgundy Connolly hide interior, while the body and chassis has in recent years been restored and repainted to a very high standard and chrome work re-plated.
Early examples of the fabled ‘Flip Tail’ Vantage, quoted at some 100 Kgs lighter than later cars, are almost impossible to find. Combined with its mechanical specification and condition, this car represents a compelling proposition to any collector or enthusiast, to acquire a superb example of Britain’s first Supercar.
