The Appeal

Introduced as a replacement for the Silver Ghost, the New Phantom was brought in in 1925 - and quickly became the global standard for a luxury car. With its larger engine and pushrod valves, the cars impressed as much with their performance as they did their sheer size and comfort.
This example is a rarely-seen Thrupp & Maberley cabriolet, with plenty of its original features and extras kept intact. Originally powered by Rootes Ltd of Picadilly, the car was based at Carlisle Mansions in London.
It now carries the proud results of an extensive restoration in the early 70s, and has been preened throughout its comfortable existence. The result is a car that defies its years and carries a truly luxuriant, period character.
The perfect fusion of vintage luxury and rarity, we’ve no doubt this veteran survivor will turn plenty of heads and attract a great deal of interest.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1927 by Rolls-Royce of Derby, England
  • Coachbuilt by Thrupp & Maberley of London
  • The vehicle was built as a cabriolet, relatively rare in UK examples
  • First ordered by Rootes Ltd for F. A. White Esq. of Carlisle Mansions, London
  • The build sheet notes extras including:
    • Nickel-plated lighting set, door handles, bonnet catches and horn
    • Smiths 8-Day clock
  • The car was first registered on September 15th 1927
  • The car has a full service record until 1938
  • In 1972 the car was registered to P.J. Knighton
  • It was then restored by Coldwell Engineering
  • From here it was sold to well-known collector & Triumph financier, John Bloor
  • In 1981 it then changed hands to a Mr. Geary, who had bought it for his father
  • We note the engraved initials of this owner on the trunk’s nickel hinge plates
  • In 1987 the car won the Phantom 1 Class at the Rolls-Royce Enthusiast Club rally
  • Since then, the car has been lightly used and always kept in secure dry storage
  • Currently indicates 82,310 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • The car’s history file seems to indicate this may well be accurate
  • Currently based in France, but UK-registered
  • Tuned and serviced less than 200 miles ago
  • MOT exempt and last tested in 2015
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • Original build sheet
    • Original service record from 1927 to 1938
    • Old MOT certificates
    • 1970s registration book
    • Paperwork for the 1987 Enthusiast Club Rally in which the car won
    • Photocopy of the assembly and equipment sheet
    • Photocopies of period test and service cards

The Condition

  • Impeccable dual-cowl coachwork in a four-door open tourer
  • Full hood with only gentle marks, no rips or tears
  • Large rear motoring trunk in fine order
  • Burgundy and black paintwork with plenty of shine and gloss
  • Wire spoke wheels with a full set of excellent-looking tyres
  • Underside and chassis look in excellent order
  • Brightwork is nicely kept with no significant faults we can spot
  • The vendor notes minor blemishes to the wings, but these are very difficult to spot
  • Original branding all in situ, including the famous “Spirit of Ecstasy”
  • Impressive period interior in biscuit leather
  • Upholstery in excellent order throughout with a peasant patina
  • No rips or tears, and only soft creasing to the plump bolsters
  • We note the embossed Rolls-Royce monogram to the doors
  • Dashboard in good order with only light wear to the instruments
  • This includes the original Smiths Clock and multi-function steering wheel
  • Considering these are nearing 100 years old, they look exceptional
  • Burgundy carpets with biscuit trim are in excellent order
  • Ultimately, this is a simply exceptional car

The Mechanics

  • 7,668cc I6 powerplant
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Fully restored in the 70s and little used since
  • The history confirms less than 2,000 miles have been done in 25+ years
  • The engine bay looks in simply excellent, period-accurate order
  • No signs of leaks or corrosion
  • The vendor reports that the engine is quiet and has plenty of pull
  • The car is starting first time with no fuss
  • We’ve no reports of leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke
  • Oil pressure and temperature are reportedly steady
  • Original undertrays are still extant
