1971 Lotus Seven Series 4 1600

Highlights

  • Only 27,372 miles from new
  • Original and unmolested car in classic BRG
  • Has been in same family since 1973
  • Recent work to brakes, ignition and coolant hoses
  • Freshly serviced and ready to use

The Appeal

The Seven Series 4 was the final roll of the dice for a classic design. Updated styling and lightweight, corrosion-resistant fibreglass bodywork garnered the car plaudits from reviewers. Quite an achievement for a design that dated back three decades.
Just 664 Series 4 cars were built and this one must be amongst the most original and sparingly used. The current keeper inherited it from his brother-in-law earlier this year - he had driven the car since 1973 and owned it since 1977. With all that known history, the low mileage of 27,372 miles is confirmed as correct.
The car is factory standard with its 1,600cc Ford Crossflow engine and finished in British Racing Green. It is an older repaint showing minor signs of age - they arguably add character or could be easily updated.
Since inheriting the car, the seller has invested a lot of time and money in improving it. This includes new brake and clutch master cylinders, rear wheel cylinders and pipes, electronic ignition, radiator hoses and a fresh service. So it arrives with the buyer ready to enjoy. A great example of the final version of Colin Chapman’s original vision.

 The vendor tells us:

It is a totally original, unmolested car, driven and looked after by predominately one person throughout its life. It does not take up much garage space, is straightforward and easy to work on when required, is not rust prone like steel cars, is attractive to everyone and not just enthusiasts. It is light, lively and fun to drive and brings a smile to your face and others wherever you are.

"I did not buy the car but inherited it from my brother in law 'because I was a car guy'. But at 80 years old I now prefer more comfort and easier access, and am looking for someone who will use it, look after it and enjoy it
like he did."

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 18th June 1971
  • HPI records five registered keepers (two of which are the vendor)
  • We are told the vendor's brother in law finally bought the car from his friend in 1977.
He is known to have driven it regularly from 1973
  • Vendor acquired the car in March 2024 on previous keeper’s death
  • Always dry stored, latterly in France
  • V5C in current keepers name
  • Registered as a Historic Vehicle so MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt
  • Various invoices dated from 1999 to 2024
  • We are told no pre-1999 paperwork was inherited
  • MOTs from 2008 to 2025 to verify mileage
  • Vendor’s family has known car since 1973 and verifies the low mileage
  • Reported to have been stripped and resprayed in early 2000s
  • Last MOT expired July 2015 with no advisories
  • Car has only covered 200 miles since last MOT test
  • Although not required now it will be MOT’d on April 1st, 2025
  • We are told that the car has never needed any major work except as detailed below
  • All MOT advisories through time reportedly addressed following the MOT's
  • Although not required it is being MOT'd on April 1st
  • VIN number S42801GT

The Condition

  • Factory correct lightweight fibreglass bodywork repainted in British Racing Green in early 2000s
  • Paintwork presents well with some chips and marks as shown in photos
  • These are minor and arguably do not detract from the overall appeal
  • There are some stone chips to the nose cone and chips to rear wing as shown
  • Rust-resistant bodywork is in fair condition for a fibreglass car with some star cracks as shown
  • We have no reports of accident damage and vendor reports no dents or scrapes
  • Underside in good order with no issues reported
  • Fitted with correct deep dish steel wheels with chrome hub caps
  • The tyres are in good condition all round (7mm tread depth)
  • Hood replaced in 2009 and we are told little or unused since purchase
  • Well kept side screens which fit well and have clear Perspex screens
  • Rear tonneau cover which we are told fits well and all fasteners work correctly
  • Black vinyl interior is factory standard and unmodified
  • Interior is well kept with a few signs of age to seats and trim
  • The driver’s seat shows some deterioration along seams as shown
  • All instruments and switches work as they should

The Mechanics

  • 1,600cc Ford Crossflow 4cyl engine believed to be original
  • 4spd manual gearbox from Ford Corsair
  • Due to lengthy family ownership vendor verifies the low mileage
  • Vendor states that the car is mechanically standard and unmodified
  • Reported to start easily with oil pressure rising quickly
  • We are told the engine appears to be ‘oil tight’
  • Cracked sump repaired in 2011 with head removed and cleaned at same time
  • Recently serviced
  • Car has covered few miles in last 10 years but vendor has checked it over
  • This has resulted in the work detailed below
  • New brake and clutch master cylinders in 2024
  • New rear wheel cylinders and pipes in 2024
  • Radiator hoses also replaced
  • Accu-spark electronic ignition and new coil fitted in 2025
  • Following minor work from a pre-MOT it will be MOT’d on April 1st.
