The Appeal

Closely related to Triumph's Spitfire roadster, the GT6 was produced from 1966 to 1973. Early development saw that prototype car starting from a standard 1963 production Spitfire, modified to include a fastback top as opposed to the convertible which was currently in production. The updated styling and design were well-received; however, due to the added weight introduced with the hard top, the standard Spitfire’s 4-cylinder engine did not provide enough power and the prototyping and development of the hard top were put on hold. 
During the 1964 Le Mans season, the prototype’s fastback design was introduced to Triumph’s racing Spitfire, producing a marked upgrade to the vehicle’s aerodynamics, and providing a 1st place finish in their class at Le Mans in 1965. Based on the success and popularity of the winning Spitfire with hardtop, the fastback production vehicle was revived, and eventually came in the form of the GT6. Powered with Triumph's 1,996 cc straight-six to overcome the extra weight from the fastback, the vehicle was released in 1966, a year later. This GT6 in particular benefits from a historic bare metal respray and restoration, performed sometime before 1992, as is confirmed by a historic valuation certificate as well as the current condition of the car. 
This car has had every detail highlighted in the recommissioning report addressed and is ready to be enjoyed, wanting for nothing mechanically and electrically. With the vehicle remaining in great condition from the restoration, and in the desirable bright red colourway, this is not one to overlook. Additionally, being a late model Mk.3 GT6, this one benefits from redesigned rear suspension, which many consider to be the most desirable configuration for these cars. 

The History and Paperwork

  • First date of registration 18th of May 1973 
  • Registered as a Historic Vehicle 
  • MOT and VED exempt in the UK 
  • Invoices present for all recommissioning and some historic parts and labour performed 
  • Historic valuation from Triumph Sports Six Club performed in 1992, stating professionally bare metal respray, interior and upholstery renewed, new carpets, stainless steel exhaust 
  • Serviced annually since recommissioning but the sale comes with workshop manual, historic MOT certificates, a historic parts catalogue, and some memorabilia as pictured 
  • Has been dry stored, has seen less than 1000 miles since 2006

The Condition

  • Bright red paintwork in good shape, just usual marks, and small scratches from the road as to be expected, still shines with plenty of gloss 
  • Body in great shape, no seen issues or damage 
  • Brightwork in great condition with only minor pitting, not taking away from the overall beauty of the car, small ding spotted in left side rear bumper as pictured 
  • Trim, rubbers, and seals are in great condition with only minor cracking seen in some places, owner reports no leaks 
  • Light lenses in excellent condition, headlights show no signs of sun damage or fogging 
  • Glass windows in overall great condition with no cracking, but some scratches seen on side windows as pictured 
  • Wheels present nicely with no kerbing, just some very minor pitting on centre caps 
  • Underside in good overall condition, no signs of serious corrosion or rust present, very minor surface corrosion present in some areas but has clearly been garage-kept 
  • Overall interior in great condition, with very little signs of use present 
  • Owner states all electronics, switches, buttons, and gauges work as they should 
  • Dashboard shows no imperfections or cracking with wood veneer in excellent condition 
  • Centre console in great condition as well with custom-fit Philips 480 period radio head unit with tape player that is fully functional. 
  • Stereo speaker pods fitted behind seats, in good condition with period styling 
  • Front seats show almost no signs of wear and are in great condition but would benefit from a deep clean 
  • Rear storage compartment in great condition with lovely carpets in a complementary dark red colourway 
  • Carpets and floor mats in good shape, showing very little wear, but would benefit from a deep cleaning 
  • Centre armrest material is a bit rough around the edges and would benefit from a refurbishment 
  • Door cards are straight and fully attached, with no signs of notable wear, and brightwork gleaming 
  • Boot is in good shape as well, the carpeting in great shape and spare tire present 
  • Headlining shows very minor sagging but overall nice and clean 
  • Some of the original yellow paintwork is visible in the spare tire storage compartment, but no signs of corrosion seen 

The Mechanics 

  • 1,966cc overhead valve straight-six engine with double Stromberg carburettors said to be in great shape and running strong, originally producing around 105hp 
  • Owner states vehicle is in excellent overall working condition and has no issues. 
  • Visual condition of the engine bay is very tidy for age, reported to be in great working order
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive said to be in smooth working condition
