The Appeal
The greatest R107 SL?
We're sure Mercedes-Benz aficionados could spend years debating such a topic, but there's a strong argument to suggest that the last of the 300 SLs are the pick of the bunch. The 3.0-litre M103 straight-six replaced the M110 in 1985 to become the most modern engine in the range. And from 1986, SLs gained galvanised body shells, greatly improving their resistance to corrosion.
After eighteen years of strong sales, R107 production finally came to an end in August 1989, the very last SLs gaining 'G' prefix registrations in the UK. This remarkably original 'Smoke Silver' 300 SL is one of those final few, first registered on 2nd August 1989. At three years old, the car was acquired by a Mr and Mrs Whitfield, and they are the last keepers on the V5C. Their company, Whitfield Machinery Limited, self-serviced the car, as did Cragside Mercedes-Benz, Newcastle, for which there are several service stamps from the 1990s. To this day, it has covered just 48,971 miles.
The 300 SL came off the road in 2015 but has recently been recommissioned, passing MOT with no advisories. As the photographs attest, the car remains in stunning condition, even down to such rare factory features as the original folding soft top; (note the Mercedes-etched Polyglas rear window)!
It's practically impossible to find R107 SLs in this condition, with such low mileage and impressive levels of originality. Be sure not to miss this excellent opportunity to acquire an incredible survivor.image.png2.66 MB
