The Appeal
The El Camino is one of those blue-sky, left-field ideas that came out of Detroit’s Imperial phase, when ideas became reality seemingly in the blink of an eye. Marrying the utility of Australia’s UTEs with the comfort of a family saloon, it seemed like the answer to nobody’s questions, yet proved to be precisely the opposite. Nicknamed automotive mullets for their business-up-front, party-at-the-back character, the coupe utility won America’s heart.
None more so than the El Camino, which was one of the pioneers of this new body style. This beautiful Aquamarine ‘64 is an early second-generation model, based on Chevrolet’s Chevelle. It arrived in the UK in 2009, and we’re told it was restored by the previous keeper over five years. He runs a body shop, so the work was done well. The attention to detail is impressive, including a smart interior in matching light blue and those lovely American Racing alloys. During the restoration, it was stored inside, and the current keeper, who acquired it in 2024, has done the same.
The car is said to be fitted with a 5.7L Chevy small block V8, mated to a TH350 3spd auto box. It is said to run and drive well. The vendor advises that there are a few very minor cosmetic jobs to note, described below and mostly relating to fitting badges. Various parts are included with the sale for fitting. We are told that it has been driven and assessed by a local American vehicle specialist who confirmed all appears well mechanically.
The vendor says:
“Overall, a really good looking example, unfortunately, I bought it because I had seen it come through the various stages and had always admired it, only to realise I have no knowledge of these vehicles or friends with them to go out with. I am quite good at buying spares for it, but at 68, my days of crawling around underneath it are over. It really needs someone in the scene fit enough to fix, drive and show it off again. I love this truck, but it's mad just looking at it in my garage.”
