The Appeal

For E-Type enthusiasts who like to drive and enjoy their cars, the Series 2 is arguably the one to have. It’s the last car to retain the classic SWB narrow body style, but it incorporates a raft of improvements, mainly focused on comfort, that make it a great touring car.

This gorgeous 1969 RHD OTS is car 299 of the run of LHD roadsters, so a very early example. It returned to the UK from the USA in 1991 and has had just five keepers in the intervening years, the current one since 2022.

The current high level of condition is a testament to the current keeper and a recent extensive and very expensive restoration by E-type specialists Malton Coachworks. It was first restored in 1999, which is recorded in handwritten notes, and then again in 2020 and 2021 by Malton Coachworks. That work covered virtually all aspects of the car and totalled £76,500, which is documented in 18 invoices. More recent work has been entrusted to specialist Hutson Motor Company, including fitting an electronic ignition with a programmable distributor. The same firm also gave the car a thorough check over and service prior to a lengthy European tour in August 2025. Other work includes tuning by AG Classic Tune.

As you would expect of a car that has received so much input, it is in extremely good condition. The sparing use since completion has preserved it, giving the buyer virtually all the benefit of that work. It arrives on the market just in time for the buyer to add it to their own classic touring plans.

The vendor says:

“It’s great to drive, and I think it's the best colour scheme for a classic E-Type, BRG with black interior and mohair hood. I look at other colours but always come back to BRG. On a sunny day, it looks magnificent. I love the true sports car feel and the straight 6 power output. I think this was lost with the S3 V12.”

The trick when buying any classic car is to find one where someone else has put in all the work and investment. This is exactly that kind of car. As you can see above and in the photos, it has been lavished with money, most notably over £76,000 of work by specialist Malton Coachworks. This work was completed in 2021 and the car has been little-used since.

In recent years the car has been looked after by marque experts Hutson Motor Company, including full check over and preparation for an August 2025 European tour. The car undertook that trip without fault.

Since the vendor acquired the car it has been carefully stored using a Carcoon and used on summer dry days.

The key to any E-Type purchase is to check the quality of the bodywork. If it’s been restored, then the work needs to have been done by experienced people because it is very complex. The photographs of this car are a testament to the work of E-Type experts Malton Coachworks. Buyers will note the flush panel fit, particularly over the doors, and the correct fit to the bonnet and panel alignment around the rear of the car. This car is in extremely good condition and is at a level that will impress even the most fastidious of marque enthusiasts.

This car’s British Racing Green over black leather combination is one of the most popular for these cars. It is well kept throughout, with only a few signs of age reflecting the fact that the current and previous keepers have owned rather than merely admired it. It is largely standard save for the wider diameter chrome wires, a common upgrade, the walnut dashboard and the classic-style DAB radio.

The Series 2 was the last E-Type to retain the torquey XK straight six, an engine that is arguably more sporting than the later GT-themed V12. These are legendarily robust engines, but they do benefit from regular servicing and maintenance.

This car’s large history file shows that it has been maintained by well-regarded model specialists like Hutson and Malton. Recent work includes a general check and service by the former prior to an August 2025 European trip. Hutson also supplied ignition upgrades, including a programmable distributor and 123 electronic ignition. The car is also fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system. The very tidy engine bay reinforces the sense of an enthusiast-owned and cherished car.

The joy of the Series 2 is that it is so reliable and usable. This car has been used regularly but sparingly, which points to its reliability for the buyer.
