The Appeal
The Land Rover Lightweight was comissioned by the British military to replace the then rather elderly Austin Champ, and, like the Champ, had to be easy to carry via helicopter, despite being a substantially larger vehicle. Land Rover found themselves struggling to fit into the requirements from the off. As it also had to be strengthened for military use, the 'Lightweight' came in heavier than its civilian counterparts. To meet the army's specs, the upper parts of the body, the doors and windscreen - not to mention the roof - were all made removable.
This particular 1972 example represents a thoughtfully modified workhorse that has benefited from long-term ownership and careful maintenance. With its Peugeot diesel engine conversion, galvanised chassis, and numerous mechanical upgrades, this Land Rover Lightweight is ready and waiting for its new owner, improved from factory and very capable.
