The Appeal
Among the rarest and most distinctive derivatives of the classic Mini, the ERA Turbo holds a unique place in British motoring history. Conceived by respected motorsport specialists Engineering Research & Application Ltd (ERA) in the late 1980s, the car took the familiar Mini City shell and transformed it into a powerful, luxury-appointed pocket rocket, complete with wide-body arches, bespoke interior, and a turbocharged 1275cc engine.
With production numbers of just around 300, it’s a rare sight today, and surviving, unrestored cars are exceedingly scarce, let alone those with such staggeringly low mileage. This example, with just 480 miles from new and superb provenance, stands out as one of the finest anywhere. Preserved in a heated garage for the last 20 years by its current owner, it represents a truly time-warp opportunity for collectors or enthusiasts seeking the very best of the breed.
Fantastic condition throughout, consistent with its mileage
A couple of small scrapes on the fibreglass bumpers, discreetly touched in
Very slight dent on the nearside rear quarter panel, visible only on close inspection
Original number plates, body kit, and factory paintwork retained
Full grey leather interior, a factory upgrade, remains in excellent order
All switches, dials, and interior fittings working as they should
No modifications from standard
This car presents in remarkably well-preserved condition, entirely in keeping with its mere 480 miles of use and long-term, climate-controlled storage. The exterior paintwork retains a fine, even gloss, while factory-correct wide-body panels and original number plates confirm its authenticity. There are a couple of minor imperfections, but they are limited to some small scrapes on the fibreglass bumpers (carefully touched in with a matching paint pencil) and a barely noticeable dent in the nearside rear quarter, detectable only when viewing the panel’s reflection directly along its length.
Inside, the car’s optional full grey leather trim remains superb, free from any damage or visible wear. The ERA-specific dashboard, dials, and controls are all intact and operational, and the interior atmosphere conveys the unmistakable feel of a car that has barely been driven since leaving the showroom. Importantly, no aftermarket modifications have been made, and the interior specification matches its original delivery details exactly.
Regularly turned by hand during storage with plugs removed and bores oiled
Recently recommissioned and inspected
Reported to drive powerfully, quietly and without fault
Mechanically, this ERA Turbo has been preserved with the same care as its bodywork and interior. While it carries no stamped service history due to its low mileage and storage period, the owner ensured that the engine was turned by hand with the spark plugs removed and the bores lightly oiled at regular intervals to maintain mechanical health.
The car was recently recommissioned and inspected in preparation for sale. Following this, it was test-driven and performed impressively — with the owner describing it as powerful, very quiet and a dream to drive. The original turbocharged engine and four-speed manual gearbox operate smoothly, offering the same engaging performance that earned these cars their cult status in the early 1990s image.png4.58 MB
