WELL, what can I say? What a survivor; what a gem. This 1954 Consul is even older than me. Six months older to be precise! What a gem of a car. In see no signs of welding or repair work at all. You could hit these original floors with a hammer and it would have no affect. Strong as an ox with all original panels and a mileage of 46k. Zero rot on this Ford. Don't believe me? Come and look. A total timewarp. I have given here a quick wash and polish. But I mean quick. Anyone machine polishing and details would have this car in a modern day showroom, What more can I say?
Sweet 1500 cc ohv engine, interior to beat most show cars and paintwork coming up like a mirror. And, just for good measure, take a look at the original radio with speaker in the roof as well as the heater! That is some 1950s radio!
I just love this Consul. To say that this model was the base model from the three-car grouping of Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac, then it's a pretty "with it" motor car for its day. Oodles of chrome - just look at that fabulous front end - great quality leather on properly sprung seats, a heater and that remarkable early car wireless. Perhaps the last two were factory options at new. I would imagine so. The quality of the steel is excellent too. Makes you wonder why so many rotted so quickly. Door bottoms are excellent, but not just the bottom sections that you see. I mean the actual underside of the doors. The metal you can run your hand along and view when lying on the ground.
All floor pressings are as original, both inside and underneath. Engine bay and boot floors etc just as good. She sounds sweet with that 1500 ohv and the three-speed box is a joy. A laminated history sheet from when the Consul was a regular show ground visitor decrees that the mileage (then 42, 000 and now 46, 000) has been documented as genuine.
The Consul was Ford's first "Five-Star" vehicle. That is to say that it came with:
Square ohv engine
Monocoque construction which allowed the engine to be set lower, giving better comfort and handling.
Synchro gear box
MacPherson front suspension
Hydraulic brakes all round.
Oh, and just to add. Like so many classics, there were carpets on top of carpets on top of mats etc. I took them all out and threw them away in an attempt to view the factory black floors which are rock solid and minus any visible repairs. Anyway, underneath this "pile" I discovered the original factory rubber mats. Slightly pink now (not sure if they were ever meant to be as red as the seats? but in very good condition. Yes, the original 71-year-old fitted rubber mats. Love it!
It's a gem of a car and I can only hope that my photos do it justice. They probably don't.
