The Appeal

By most accounts, Howard "Dutch" Darrin wasn't exactly thrilled about working with Kaiser Motors. An independent designer by trade, he often dreamed up bold, extravagant, and fiercely futuristic creations that simply didn't work for a commercial market. He stormed out of the company's offices more than once because the "juice squeezers," as he called the in-house styling department members, had transformed his creations into something far more conventional. While Kaiser's leadership found him rather likable, getting between this strong-willed man and the final product proved to be a particularly explosive exercise.

In 1951, Kaiser nonetheless wanted something bold. Something that stood out. After probably loosening their ties, wiping their brows, and picking up the phone, they called "Dutch"... Unfortunately, the Henry J, once again, turned out to be far more sensible and conventional than what he had envisioned. So Darrin left the company a second time, the very next year.

Darrin decided to go it alone. He took a Henry J and got to work privately with Bill Tritt to create a sports car made entirely of fiberglass. He then invited Henry Kaiser to come see it. A violent argument erupted, but "Dutch" ultimately got his way, particularly because Mrs. Kaiser declared it was the most beautiful car she had ever seen.

The car was unveiled to the public two years before the Corvette hit the market, which seemed like perfect timing. But the Darrin fell behind, largely because the designers couldn't find a sporty enough engine. In 1953, the merger with Willys-Overland brought the Willys F-head inline six-cylinder into their ranks, and they could finally move into production.

Tragically, the car didn't reach dealerships until 1954, by which time the Corvette had already captured a considerable share of the market.

Since then, the Darrin has become a story that is both tragic and incredibly fascinating. It's one of the boldest automobiles ever built in the United States, with a multitude of complex styling details and a distinctive grille shaped like a "pout," impossible to ignore. Its doors feature an unusual sliding system, the soft top locks in three positions rather than simply fastening over the cabin, and its road manners are remarkable. But for Kaiser Motors, it was too little and far too late.

The company was in trouble and, after a labor strike, the loss of a lease, and an unexpected snowstorm, it became impossible to continue. The remaining cars were sold to Darrin so he could transform them into special models. Ironically, these modifications allowed the car to come even closer to the top of its class.

Early Kaiser Darrins have become extremely rare today: only 435 examples were built during its sole year of production—a figure ultimately comparable to other sports cars of the era. They stand as testimony to a truly remarkable story, blending difficult-tempered designers, an innovative company with an unfortunate fate, and a genuine desire to shake up traditional automotive conventions.

This particular Darrin, with its Champagne White paint and contrasting red interior, is the 367th example produced and can technically be considered a single-owner car from the start. It has traveled only 58,978 miles (approximately 94,884 km) since delivery, having spent much of its life in storage. It was meticulously restored by an expert engineer several decades ago.

Since then, it has been kept primarily in dry storage in a secure location, and it is now ready to hit the road again.

Its history truly deserves attention, its condition is exceptional, and its design remains as spectacular as ever. A car you absolutely shouldn't pass up: it's a genuine head-turner.

Vehicle Condition

  •  Original fiberglass body with Champagne White paint
  •  Contrasting red soft top with three positions
  •  Highly contrasting grille and bumpers
  •  Unusual sliding "pocket doors" in perfect working order
  •  15-inch steel wheels with whitewall tires and chrome-plated wire wheel covers
  •  Pleated red leather bucket seats that appear to be in near-new condition
  •  Clean carpeting with no stains or tears
  •  Simple and elegant dashboard with carefully arranged controls
Let's be frank: if "bold" is synonymous with "unusual," then the Darrin is its perfect embodiment. It's one of the most surprising-looking cars of its era, designed with an unapologetic post-futuristic vision down to its finest lines and details.

Conceived by the eternal eccentric Howard "Dutch" Darrin, it uses sliding doors mounted on rails, designed to preserve the fluidity of the silhouette and avoid breaking its lines. A remarkably unconventional styling choice, but impossible to ignore: this car was bound to be a conversation starter.

The front end is equally singular. The tiny grille seems to pout as if blowing a kiss, while its concave lines evoke a seashell. The whole thing is made of high-tech fiberglass—a first at the time for an American automobile. No wonder, then, that it attracts so many eyes today. It must have provoked its share of reactions when it was new.

Our particular example fully expresses this styling philosophy, with its Champagne White livery, its three-position red soft top, and its original steel wheels. The contrast is particularly striking, but on the Darrin, it underscores each of its bold and curved lines.

The fiberglass shows no cracks or separations, all elements open and slide as they should, and we understand that the car has been maintained in a configuration faithful to the original. The result is a particularly special classic automobile that will turn heads just about everywhere it goes.

The futuristic vision continues inside the Darrin. It is simple, elegant, orderly, and resolutely uncluttered, designed to give full prominence to the exuberance of the body.

The driver is greeted with a three-spoke sports steering wheel and a curved dashboard featuring a large speedometer and carefully arranged instruments. The ignition and various controls are also perfectly laid out, with toggle switches rather than bulky buttons. The whole is complemented by a generously padded dashboard.

The condition is excellent: no tears, very clean upholstery, immaculate carpeting, and all equipment functions as intended. The sliding doors operate smoothly on their rails with no particular issues to report. Even the trunk is in very good condition—and it proudly houses filing cabinets filled with impressive historical documentation.

The Mechanics

  •  2.6-liter Willys F-head inline six-cylinder
  •  Three-speed manual transmission with overdrive
  •  Rear axle with 4.09:1 ratio for balanced handling
  •  Independent front suspension and rigid rear axle with leaf springs
  •  Braking provided by four drum brakes from the contemporary Kaiser Manhattan
Powered by the Willys "Hurricane" inline six-cylinder, the Darrin is not a sports car capable of setting speed records, but it is unquestionably robust. These cars rest on familiar mechanics that contrast with the highly unusual personality of their body.

Our example would run very well, with a lively engine and ride comfort befitting what the fortunate new owner is entitled to expect.

The engine compartment is in excellent condition, nearly flawless, and no particular issues have been reported.
