The Appeal
This 1961 Volkswagen was converted into a 'GP' tubular chassis beach buggy around 1979, as were lots of Beetles around the mid-70s.
Around 5 years ago London-based sculptor, designer and fabricator Benedict Radcliffe renovated it. Combining the original Volkswagen running gear with exposed tubular construction, he has curated the main components and focused on the most important features - the iconic Sheel Mann seats imported from the US - combined with chrome deep dish wheels and balloon tyres, turns a fairly run-of-the-mill sand rail style buggy into something closer to a piece of rolling automotive sculpture.
Finished in super vivid orange, this example has a more playful, lifestyle-led character, with the comfortable Scheel-Mann® front seats and space in the rear for a dog or a picnic. It was created by Radcliffe for display at the Nautilus event in Italy, held in the grounds of the Jules Verne-inspired Motel Nautilus, following an invitation from Federico Fabbri of Motoring Attitude.
Displayed alongside it's green sibling at the season-closing party, this Orange Beach would make a striking addition to any collection of unusual Volkswagens, automotive art or design-led specials. Acquired individually, it would be a memorable event car in its own right, though there is obvious added appeal in reuniting both Radcliffe creations as a pair.
