The Appeal
Few could have predicted the enduring success of the Land Rover when it was launched in 1948 as a rugged, versatile and affordable vehicle for agricultural and industrial use. Yet what began as a utilitarian workhorse would go on to become one of the most recognisable and influential off-road vehicles ever produced.
While successive generations introduced new engines, refinements and improved capability, the fundamental design remained remarkably faithful to the original concept, right through to the final Defender of 2016.
The platform’s versatility also gave rise to a wide range of specialist conversions, from ambulances and recovery vehicles to expedition trucks and campers. This example is one such vehicle, believed to have been converted by Park Ranger during the 1960s using a modified Dormobile elevating roof, creating a highly unusual and characterful period camper.
Powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, it has been refinished from its original brown-and-beige colour scheme into its current blue-and-white livery under previous ownership. Aside from this change, the vehicle is said to remain largely faithful to its original specification and presents as an increasingly rare survivor from the era. Whether preserved and enjoyed for its originality or used as the basis for further sympathetic improvement, it offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a distinctive piece of Land Rover history.
