1972 Jensen Interceptor III 7.2L

  • Large history file of regular ongoing maintenance

The Appeal

The MkIII Interceptor added luxury, extra safety and an even bigger 'MOPAR' motor to the West Brom GT's already compelling appeal. It is perhaps no surprise that these later cars, with their more stylish looks, were the most success and survive in the largest numbers.

Just 159 Series III cars left the works painted in this car’s attractive Reef Blue. A Statement of Origin certificate confirms that this, plus the blue leather cabin, is original. The car is fitted with a matching blue vinyl roof. The Statement of Origin refers to option code ‘VR’, which we suspect, but cannot confirm, refers to this optional roof finish. The car is also fitted with refurbished 15in GKN alloys featuring bespoke blue trim.
As a 128-prefix car, this is one of 708 built and a very early model. It is in really good condition inside and out, having clearly been cherished by the current enthusiast keeper, who bought it in 2022, and the previous handful of owners. The vendor tells us that in recent years it has received over £26,000 of work including extensive mechanical fettling. most recently the power steering system was overhauled in October 2025. You can check the details in the photos. This is a great version of the sort of car we’re unlikely to ever see again.
The vendor says:
“It has often been said – and many would rightly argue – that 1966-1976 Jensen Interceptors were, and remain, a realistic alternative to the Aston Martin V8 of the same period. Dubbed ‘a gentleman’s express’ by the media at the time of its launch in October 1971, the now-matured Mk3 elevated the Jensen Interceptor to even greater heights. It was the most successful of the three models achieving the highest production figures of any Jensen. Designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and built by Vignale, it was one of the most dramatic supercars of the 1960s and 1970s, attracting the attentions of esteemed owners such as HRH Princess Anne, Sir Cliff Richard, actors John Thaw CBE and Tony Curtis, ex-heavyweight boxing champion, Sir Henry Cooper OBE KSG. Oh, and Eric Morecambe OBE once told Parky that his Jensen Interceptor ‘brought him sunshine’. To drive, it’s more GT than sports car, but a well-sorted example is fun in the country and effortless in the city. You’ll be amazed at how little it rolls in bends and how simple it is to accurately position – and, with a good-sized boot and rear seats, it’s a car you can enjoy even as a daily…fuel consumption aside. Performance upgrades are simple, too, and not frowned upon within the Jensen scene. Fifty years on, the appeal of this striking Jensen Interceptor III Fastback #128-4850 remains as strong as the day it was built. With less than 27,000 original miles on the clock since new, it has lived a somewhat charmed life but now eagerly awaits its next chapter."

The vendor says:

"One of the most fascinating attributes of this car is the comprehensive and fully traceable provenance, in the form of a large history file, receipts and invoices documenting its life. The car has been sympathetically and consistently maintained and improved, including recent recommissioning and expenditure in the last couple years by a previous owner to the tune of approximately £26,000. The result of this is not only a car that presents in a lovely cosmetic condition, but one that is also mechanically very sound indeed. The car starts 'on the button', the 6.3 V8 burbles deeply and produces excellent power on the road. It gives a surprising turn of speed even by modern standards! Most importantly it steers and rides absolutely beautifully, making driving this car as easy and relaxing as you could wish for from a 53 year old car! The interior is in a clean and complete condition, with no major damage or unacceptable wear. All the major controls and features appear to be functioning as intended, and this car gives no inclination that it may require any substantial attention in the near future. The shell and bodywork appear to be in a sound and solid condition. The paintwork is in excellent overall condition and retains a deep lustre, with a few minor imperfections as one would expect. The brightwork is also very presentable and in no need of attention. To sum up, this car represents an exciting opportunity to own and immediately enjoy a very cool and iconic piece of British motoring heritage and will be sure to earn much credibility and admiration at any shows."
