The Appeal
The E-Type is the sort of car that locked itself into popular culture, completely changing the public's image of the legendary marque and becoming synonymous with the heady days of the 60s and 70s. This was an age of true Cool Britannia, and for many, this machine was the ultimate in Best of British.
The Series 3 E-Type OTS was one of the E-Type's most fawned-over evolutions, offering the car's throatiest V12 engine with new Zenith carbs, extra legroom from all angles, and subtle styling upgrades. If you're going after a British sports car, of course, you should look for one in British Racing Green; this one ticks all of the boxes and is a particularly charismatic, beautifully kept machine.
This special example has been in the current owner's care for some 16 years, garaged and stored in a Carcoon throughout. Its significance is underlined by its inclusion in Malcolm Mackay's authoritative book "The Original E-Type," and Heritage Certificates confirm that only 16 RHD OTS examples in BRG were manufactured after it.
Accompanying the car are a factory hardtop, the original steering wheel and headlights (a woodrim lift-off steering wheel and updated headlights are currently fitted), service documents, and old MOTs. The curvaceous frame of the E-Type was once described by Enzo Ferrari as 'the most beautiful car ever built', something that still runs very true today. Everything to the car's frame is achingly cool, with a friendly facade sweeping into a low-slung, effortlessly tidy roadster - famous lines that perfectly match with its example's British Racing Green colour scheme.
With a history of continuous care and top-notch storage, this example is clean and nicely presented, with a fine shine to its paintwork and a handsome array of chrome that contrasts very nicely. In the cabin, the upholstery carries only gentle levels of patina, while the dashboard and trim itself all looks in fine condition.
The vendor notes that the rev counter has an intermittent sticking issue, and that the driver's door button can be a bit temperamental. Other than this, we understand that the car is a fine, reliable machine.
Popping open that handsome long-nosed bonnet reveals the much-loved Jaguar V12, beautifully kept and upgraded with an electrical fan and ignition. The Series 3 E-Type offers 272hp and a top speed peaking over 140mph. Still plenty to write home about!
