The Appeal
Renowned motoring journalist Paul Frère described the 911 Carrera 3.0 as the best 911 ever made, and backed up his conviction by owning one for decades. Produced for the European market between 1975 and 1977, the Carrera 3.0 represented the high-water mark of the impact-bumper 911—combining the Turbo’s wide rear wings with the naturally aspirated 930/02 engine derived directly from the 930 Turbo development. With fewer than 3,700 examples built, today the Carrera 3.0 is one of the most sought-after air-cooled 911 variants among collectors worldwide.
This 1976 example is finished in rare Sahara Beige with brown “Carrera” side decals, and is specified with air conditioning, heat-absorbing tinted glass, and a 5-speed manual gearbox. Originally delivered new in Italy, where very few examples of this model were sold, the car now shows 58,551 kilometers on the odometer. It retains matching numbers for its engine, transmission, and chassis, and is accompanied by a Porsche Classic technical certificate. The vendor informs us that the car is in very good condition, and that all instruments are in working order with no mechanical faults reported. With a tan leather interior complementing the exterior, this is a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the most collectible and usable air-cooled 911s in a rare and highly appealing specification.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0, produced from 1976 to 1977, is a highly regarded classic 911 that bridged the gap between the legendary Carrera RS models and later, performance-focused 911s. Powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter flat-six engine derived from the turbocharged 930’s robust aluminum crankcase, it produced around 200 horsepower and delivered strong performance for its era, with a top speed of approximately 235 km/h. The Carrera 3.0 featured wider rear bodywork, improved handling, and a relatively lightweight design, making it one of the most engaging driver’s cars of the 1970s. With only a limited number produced, it is now considered a rare and collectible model, valued for its blend of classic styling, mechanical simplicity, and its significant place in the evolution of the Porsche 911 lineage.
The Mechanics
- 3.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine (type 930/02) producing 200bhp
- Five-speed manual transmission (915 gearbox)
- K-Jetronic fuel injection
- Aluminum crankcase with Nikasil-lined cylinders
- Larger-diameter intake and exhaust valves with more aggressive timing than the 2.7 version
- Crankshaft inherited from the 3.0 RS racing version
- The vendor reports no mechanical faults
The 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 is powered by a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine (type 930/02) producing 200bhp, paired with a five-speed manual 915 gearbox. It features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, an aluminum crankcase with durable Nikasil-lined cylinders, and larger intake and exhaust valves combined with more aggressive cam timing than the earlier 2.7-liter Carrera. The engine also benefits from a crankshaft inherited directly from the 3.0 RS racing program, contributing to its robust and high-performance character. According to the vendor, the car presents with no known mechanical faults, further enhancing its appeal as a rare and highly desirable example of Porsche's celebrated air-cooled 911 lineage.
