The Appeal
It’s not a stretch to say that in the late 60s and through the 1970s, Jaguar’s XJ was the best saloon car in the world. Sure, the build quality could be variable, but the car’s intrinsic qualities, particularly its ability to serenely waft occupants along in real comfort, were unmatched. That it also looked fantastic, thanks to William Lyon’s eye for detail, was an added bonus.
Those qualities continue to make good cars stand out. This 1978 Daimler Sovereign 4.2L is one of the last built, a Series 2 car that got the standardised long wheelbase body and detailed cosmetic changes. Finished in the very attractive combination of Damson Red with black vinyl roof over beige leather, it is a remarkably preserved ‘timewarp’ classic that is a testament to its current long-term keeper of 39 years.
The Daimler models got extra exterior chrome, a distinctive fluted grille, and uprated leather. This highly original car offers buyers a chance to discover just why the XJ was so lauded and so good that it remained in production, little changed, for 24 years.
