The Appeal
Originally developed for Fiat, the Montecarlo didn't look much like a Lancia when it hit the market, but it had quite the impression on the dedicated petrolhead as soon as it hit the showrooms. It was a characterful, lightweight machine, styled by Pininfarina into a post-futurist silhouette with remarkably engaging performance. The Series 2, produced from 1980, addressed the well-documented braking shortcomings of the earlier car and is widely considered the more accomplished car. In Spider form, with its removable soft top, the Montecarlo offers open-air motoring to complement an already thrilling chassis.
This particular car is something genuinely special. Purchased new in 1981 from TAK Motors in South Africa - the official Ferrari and Lancia agent run by Mr Sheinman - it was one of just 80 Series 2 Montecarlos that they imported. When brand new, it was supplied with the desirable Alquati conversion, comprising twin carburettors, uprated cams, modified pistons, an ANSA exhaust, and Compomotive split rim wheels, producing over 150bhp according to the vendor. The result, in the vendor's words, was "the ultimate go-kart."
Finished in a rare white with its original grey fabric interior, this Montecarlo has remained in the same hands for over 40 years. The vendor describes the car as being in "time warp" condition. Showing 27,064 km and serviced annually, it is reported to be a first-turn starter - ready and waiting for its lucky new owner. IMG_2468.jpeg4.38 MB
