The Appeal
In the 1960s, the British Army were looking to replace their fleet of comparatively weedy Austin Champs, and it's of little surprise their eyes fell upon the almost synonymous British off-roader. The Land Rover was a perfect option for the army - save for one small snag. They needed to be able to lift it with a Westland Wessex helicopter.
Land Rover got to work on making a lightweight Landie for exactly that purpose. It proved a remarkably difficult project, making the car a bit of a fold-up vehicle, with a 4-inch narrower wheelbase. Even with all that, it ended up being a little too heavy for use - but the British Army opted, instead, to improve the chopper. Job done!
This 1982 example of the Landie half-ton presents beautifully, having been properly restored by specialists John Brown 4x4 in Thirsk. Finished in the correct Drab Olive paint for its era, and retaining all its original fittings and fixtures, this is an immediately evocative classic.
