The Appeal
The RS1600i returned a classic nameplate to enable Ford to homologate the Escort for racing. Despite being sandwiched between the XR3 and XR3i, it was hugely popular with Ford selling nearly double the planned 5,000. 2,600 reached UK, making these cars, with their evocative nameplate, the rarest of modern Ford hot hatches.
The RS1600i got more power than the XR3i thanks to higher compression and a host of other detail modifications. Arguably, it looks better too thanks to purposeful spoilers and delightful decals. Good, standard and well kept survivors like this one are hugely desirable.
This car was extensively restored across the bodywork, paintwork, interior and mechanicals over the last two years. Recent work by specialist GS Escorts included servicing, attention to the rear suspension, brake overhaul, new stainless steel exhaust and a replacement fuel tank. Since July 2024 alone more than £4,000 has been invested with Ford Parts R Us including new cambelt, gearbox rebuild, new metering head, injectors, distributor, camshaft lifters and intake hose.
Finished in correct Caspian Blue with grey crush velour interior, it is a really good example that is said to run and drive equally well. This car is now usefully MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt. However, to give buyers transparency it was last MOT’d in February 2024 with no advisories. It has been barely used since.

The RS1600i is a proper homologated Ford and this one looks fantastic.
