The Appeal
It is mark of just how enduring the Mk1 GTI’s popularity was that Volkswagen allocated 1,000 of its final, limited-edition Campaign models for the UK market alone. These cars, with their ‘P Slot’ alloys and other detail improvements remain the pinnacle of Mk1 ownership.
And with good reason. With its revvy 1.8L engine, impeccable handling and crisp Giugiaro lines, the Mk1 is the ‘daddy’ of hot hatches. Very good examples are becoming rare, particularly as owners now tend to hang onto them, which makes this car a proper find.
It is, inevitably, a very reluctant sale by the current keeper, who has owned it for 20 years. Soon after purchase he had the car fully restored, including an engine rebuild. In subsequent years, he has continued to invest in the car, most recently completing another respray, full underseal and a full service. This work included new cam belt and water pump, oil and oil filter change, new spark plugs and fuel filter totalling £944.
The car will be sold with a useful voluntary MOT. This is a much-loved Mk1 and we’re sure the buyer will quickly feel the same.
The vendor says:
“The only way I can describe it is that it is like driving a go-cart, you feel part of the car and one with the road, which is what I love most about the car. The Campaign body-hugging seats, good handling, and the sound of the engine is very nostalgic bringing back good memories whenever you drive it.
“The car has been loved over the last 20 years, but I feel that she needs an owner who wants to tinker with it throughout the year and take it to car shows. While I have owned it, I have only taken it to two car shows and it has spent long periods in the garage not being driven. It is time for this car to find a new owner to look after it for many years to come. I will undoubtedly have seller’s remorse when I reach retirement age, but at this moment in my life, it is destined for a new owner.”

The vendor says:
“Owned the vehicle for 20 years, predominantly been stored in garage during that period. I joined the Navy in 2009 (weekly commute to and from Cornwall (300 mile round trip)), quickly realised it is not a commuter car, as such that have been short periods where the vehicle was driven, but subsequently ended up back in the garage.
“Vehicle was serviced with each MOT, but history not available. I never intended to sell the car, but have reached the point where I feel someone else could find more enjoyment from it.”
"The speedometer over reads by exactly 10mph, this is believed to be due to a weak speedometer spring needle inside the speedo cluster. This is an age related issue and would likely need a specialist repair to open the Speedo cluster to replace the spring. The owner has two additional Speedo clusters as spares should the new owner opt to correct this issue. However, because it over reads by exactly 10 mph, it is easily managed and accounted for."
