The Appeal
Nobody expected dowdy Peugeot to create the greatest hot hatch of the '80s and '90s, yet it did. Light, agile and with a telepathic level of driver engagement, the 205 GTI is the stuff of motoring legend.
The original 1.6L car provides the revviest, fizziest 205 GTI fix, which the lucky buyer of this 1988 car will discover. It is the one you want, a pre-cat example with the 115hp engine. The vendor acquired it in late 2022 as a barn find a few years ago, subsequently completing a sympathetic restoration that prioritised originality and factory standard settings.
The work included a respray in correct slate grey metallic plus an array of cosmetic and mechanical work. Highlights include new sills, new stainless steel exhaust and manifold, new brake pads and discs all round, Bilstein shocks and refurbished wheels with new tyres. The car has also been recently fully serviced and will be sold with a fresh MOT
With just 80,000 miles from new, few owners and all that work, buying this pleasingly factory-standard GTI is a chance to capitalise on the current keeper’s extensive work.
The vendor says:
“Wonderful car, it's a little road rocket and handles beautifully. I love the trick sunroof that slides back and the great '80s soundtrack. Whenever it's parked up, people come and ask about it. so much more fun than any modern hatch.”
