1989 Trabant 601

Highlights

  • One of only two Trabants brought to South Africa after the fall of the Berlin Wall
  • Its sister car is on display at the Franschhoek Car Museum in Cape Town
  • Retains its original decals and factory-standard two-stroke engine

The Appeal

The Trabant 601 is one of the most recognisable symbols of Cold War-era Eastern Europe. Produced in East Germany from 1964 to 1991, its air-cooled two-stroke engine and Duroplast body panels made it an engineering curiosity, and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 transformed it into a cultural icon.

Very few examples made it as far as Southern Africa, and this 1989 model carries a remarkable story: it is one of just two Trabants driven from Germany through Africa to South Africa after the Wall came down. Its companion car now resides in the Franschhoek Car Museum in Cape Town.
Presented in what the vendor describes as very good overall condition, this 601 has been garage-stored throughout its time in South Africa and has benefited from recent mechanical attention. The vendor notes it starts and idles with the choke engaged but may benefit from a timing adjustment.
