The Appeal
With the Mk2, the Golf GTI properly came of age. Where other Hot hatches might excel in certain areas, the Mk2 was the complete package, the consummate all-rounder. This is a car as at home on Welsh B-roads as German autobahns.
The 16V provides more torque and power through the rev range than the 8V. This 1989 16V is a pleasingly factory-standard car in Tornado red with smart plaid grey fabric cabin. It benefits from a range of useful factory options, including electric windows, mirrors and central locking, plus an equally lengthy list of recent restoration and maintenance. It was resprayed in 2020 and we’re told that the cabin has also been retrimmed.
In 2025, the car received over £3,600 of mechanical work, including brake and suspension work. The cambelt was also changed. The MOT runs to September 2026 with no advisories.
The vendor won the car in a competition earlier this year and is selling it reluctantly.
The vendor says:
“The perfect Classic, reliable VW engineering, classic styling, all in a great looking package!”
