The appeal
The genius of the 964 lay in retaining virtually the entire iconic silhouette of the 911, whilst thoroughly modernising its mechanical and technical components. Its appeal lies in particular in its ease of use, its durable galvanised bodywork and its significantly improved handling, thanks to a sophisticated rear suspension system using coil springs and semi-trailing arms, replacing the traditional torsion bars. The introduction of ABS also helped to make the car safer.
With its rear-wheel drive and five-speed manual gearbox, the Carrera 2 remains the purist’s choice amongst the various versions of the 964. Fine examples, such as this 1990 911 in Navy Blue Metallic, are increasingly sought after. This colour offers an elegant alternative to the more common Guards Red and Grand Prix White of the era.
We are told that the bodywork, paintwork and interior are all in very good condition, with no particular faults reported and no work required. Mechanically, the car is said to run perfectly and has had its starter motor and battery replaced, as well as a battery cut-off switch fitted – a particularly practical feature for a car likely to be left stationary for long periods. It has covered only a few kilometres since its last service, carried out in late 2024. With its confirmed matching chassis and engine numbers, its French registration document and its roadworthiness test valid until November 2026, it has all the hallmarks of a well-maintained air-cooled 911 with an interesting specification.

The 3.6-litre M64 flat-six engine represented a significant evolution of the classic 911 engine. It produced 250 ch and featured, in particular, dual ignition – designed to improve combustion – Bosch Motronic electronic control and an optimised oil cooling system. These developments helped to improve both the driving pleasure and the reliability of the 964.
The seller states that the car has been regularly serviced and is being offered for sale with no particular faults. The recent service history outlined above shows that the car has covered only a limited distance since its last service. In April 2025, over €1,000 was reportedly spent on replacing the starter motor and fitting a battery cut-off switch, in order to improve the car’s reliability during periods of storage. The roadworthiness certificate can be seen in the photographs and remains valid until November 2026. image.png4.21 MB
