The Appeal

Having sewn up the compact, executive, and luxury saloon markets, BMW set its sights on the rarefied world of extremely expensive grand tourers in the late 1980s. The resulting E31 was both a shark-nosed nod to the firm’s excellent E24 and an advanced technological tour de force. Engaging, stylish, and utterly effortless, these cars are drawing renewed enthusiast interest, and for good reason.

This 1995 840Ci is an earlier 4L V8 model with many benefits for enthusiasts. Its simpler electronics can be diagnosed with OBD-I, and these tough engines have simpler timing belt arrangements. They’re also arguably more engaging to drive thanks to a proper throttle cable rather than the more complicated ‘drive-by-wire’ of later cars. The metallic black paintwork and light grey leather are in good order, with some light wear to the usual high-traffic areas, and it is said to be completely standard, including the factory sound system. It also features a set of expensive optional BBS cross-spoke split-rim deep-dish alloys.

The history file shows regular servicing and maintenance by specialists and main dealers. The car has covered few miles since the last service, but may be due a service based on age. There is also a 2022 invoice for a transmission service. The current MOT runs to September 2027 with minor advisories to note.
