The Appeal

Sandwiched between the ‘Classic’ and the highly regarded L322, the P38 has taken a while to enjoy its place in the sun. That’s happening now, as enthusiasts rediscover a Range Rover that is more usable than the cherished early model, but less complex than the later one.

This handsome 2001 example, in rare Monte Carlo Blue with smart black leather, proves the point. Its keepers have used it properly, racking up close to 190,000 miles, yet it continues in regular use with the current keeper. He tells us he owns two others, but picks this one for daily driving. That makes sense: the M51 2.5L BMW engine is tough, reliable, and economical, and this 4x4 is ideal for towing heavy loads.

Nicknamed "Monte" by its current keeper, it benefits from a significant 2025 mechanical overhaul covering the gearbox, air suspension, cooling system, and injectors. A RON box has also been fitted to improve throttle response. The last service was in September 2024 since when it has covered around 2,000 miles. The vendor reports that the engine starts readily after a single glow cycle and runs smoothly.

Inside, the black leather over black dash, carpets, and headlining present well, having been protected by mats throughout. The vendor describes the bodywork as in good condition with only a few minor dents and says the underside is also in good order. With an MOT valid until September 2027, this is a practical, increasingly collectable Range Rover that offers genuine capability alongside classic luxury.
