The Appeal
The original Mercedes-Benz CLK coupé offered the styling of a compact grand tourer with much of the engineering and refinement of the larger E-Class. Launched
in 1997, it arrived at a time when Mercedes was expanding its model range, giving buyers a more sporting-looking alternative to the traditional saloon without sacrificing
the comfort expected of the three-pointed star.
Although its styling suggested a standalone model, the W208 CLK was based on the contemporary W202 C-Class platform. Its distinctive appearance, however, owed
more to the larger W210 E-Class, particularly the twin oval headlamps that became a defining feature of Mercedes design during the late 1990s. The result was a neat,
four-seat coupé with a relatively compact footprint and a more individual character than the saloons from which its mechanical components were derived.
The range initially comprised the CLK 200, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 136bhp, and the supercharged 2.3-litre CLK 230 Kompressor, which
offered around 193bhp. The range expanded with the 1999 facelift, which brought revised detailing and
improved standard equipment. Inside, the CLK followed familiar Mercedes conventions, with a well-organised but
plain dashboard, comfortable front seats and a rear bench suitable for occasional adult use. Equipment varied by trim and year, with Elegance and Sport versions
providing different approaches to specification and appearance.

The boot was usefully sized for a coupé, making the car practical enough for touring rather than
merely weekend outings. This one is a very late W208 dating from April 2002, just five months before the model was replaced by the more modern W209. It’s a completely standard, unmodified car in sought-after Tanzanite Blue, with a miles of just under 71,000 from new, a full tan leather interior and smart AMG alloy wheels. It’s presented in smart,
unrestored condition with an MOT valid until December 2026.
