The Appeal
After years of producing only models based on the Biturbo of 1981, Maserati entered a new era in the late 1990s. As well as becoming controlled by Ferrari, it launched a truly new car: the 3200 GT, whose performance and curvaceous Giorgetto Giugiaro styling brought Maserati into the spotlight again. The car evolved into the 4200 GT (officially the Coupe and Spyder), which used a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 and transaxle transmission, resulting in near-perfect front-rear weight distribution. The GranSport upped the game with improved aerodynamics, a sportier interior and different tuning for the suspension, engine and transmission.
This 2005 example was purchased by the seller in 2024; the previous owner had owned the car for eight years. The timing chains were changed in August 2024, less than 1,000 miles ago. The seller states that the car comes with a “very full service history, with plenty of bills from specialists”.
Outside, the GranSport changes – side skirts, deep front spoiler, trunk lid spoiler and chrome mesh grilles – are all present. The seller notes some small marks and scuffs to the gray paintwork and dark gray 19-inch wheels. Inside, the leather/cloth interior presents well, with the seller reporting some wear to the seat bolsters and the sticky operation of some buttons, which they state is common to this model.
The seller says, “This beautiful coupe needs a new home as I am downsizing; any enthusiast will enjoy this car, which has been driven regularly and serviced properly, and would benefit only from a little cosmetic attention.” This is a fine example of a muscular and charismatic Maserati that will deliver rewarding driving experiences to whoever is lucky enough to be its next keeper.
