The Appeal

After the Mk4 GTI misstep, VW pulled out all the stops with the Mk5. To prove the point, they introduced the elevated R-spec, which followed a brilliantly simple but now-extinct formula: a big engine in a small hot hatch. It launched the R line and was, still is, one of the greatest Golfs ever built.

These cars are becoming a magnet for enthusiasts. Plenty are out there, but the key is finding one like this: a low-mileage, low-keeper car that is unmodified and remains exactly as VW’s engineers intended. Finished in silver with black leather, it is a strong example that still presents well in the usual vulnerable areas, like the alloy rims and driver’s bolster.

The extensive service history shows regular servicing by main dealers and specialists, most recently in April 2026. The front wings have been replaced to address a known weakness on these cars, and the transfer box seals are new.

With a clean MOT to May 2027, this is a proper find for the many fans of these entertaining cars.
